The Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) of Gujarat has nabbed a fifth accused for his alleged involvement in a module of the Islamic State of Khorasan Province (ISKP) that was busted on June 10.
Following the arrest in Srinagar on Sunday, Zubair Ahmed Munshi (30), a Kashmir resident, is en route to Ahmedabad on a transit remand. According to ATS, Munshi was involved in conducting meetings of the ISKP module in Kashmir and was also in contact with the handlers. According to ATS, the members of the module were using India as a transit point to eventually reach Afghanistan and allegedly carry out attacks in Khorasan region of Afghanistan.
Munshi is expected to be produced before a Porbandar magistrate court for remand Tuesday afternoon. The ATS is planning to seek his remand for 20 days, said multiple ATS officials.
Five people have been arrested so far for allegedly being part of the ISKP module.
While Ubaid Nasir Mir (22), Hanan Swal (22) and Mohammad Hajim (21) were apprehended by the ATS from Porbandar Railway Station and arrested on June 9, another accused, Sumeraben Malek (34), was apprehended from her Surat residence and was arrested on June 10. The four were produced before a Porbandar magistrate court on June 10 and were remanded to 13 days in custody.
The ATS also added that Malek, who has an ongoing family dispute at a Surat court, had allegedly conducted reconnaissance of courts in the district.
“The three caught from Porbandar were planning to escape from India via the sea route from Porbandar. Sumeraben had further plans to move out of India but she had also shown her willingness of doing reconnaissance of courts,” a senior official at ATS said.
Seeking their remand for 20 days, the ATS had Saturday sought their custody to determine whether they were planning a terror attack in India or if they were associated with any terror attacks in the past.
The police also demanded their custody on the grounds of ascertaining who all their handlers were if there were other persons assisting them financially and if various meetings were held in Jammu and Kashmir to propagate the ideology of the banned terror outfits of ISKP and ISIS.
On Saturday, ATS had stated that the four arrested had revealed that one Abu Hamza was the handler who had radicalised them. An offence has been registered at ATS police station on June 9 under UAPA and for the offence of criminal conspiracy under IPC.
The police also submitted that seven mobile phones, recovered from the four accused, have been seized and sent to the Directorate of Forensic Sciences (DFS) in Gandhinagasr for recovering data. The accused are also required to be interrogated on their call data records, the police said.
