Apprehending attack on the three accused in the June 12 gangrape case, who are likely to be brought to the Surat sub-jail after their police remand period expires on Friday, the prison authorities have taken some extra precautions.

The Crime Branch officials will produce the trio before a local court. If the court denies extending their remand, they would be sent to the sub-jail. The jail has in the past witnessed incidents of attack on accused and convicts in rape cases. Now,it is learnt that anger is boiling among the sub-jail inmates over the incident and they are “waiting” for the accused so that they can beat them up.

But the jail authorities are in no mood to take any chance, particularly after seeing the mob fury against the accused outside the New Civil Hospital a day after the crime was committed.

Jailor M D Doshi said: “We have got information from our sources that if these three accused are brought to the sub-jail,they will be beaten up by the prisoners… Considering the anger of inmates,we have made some arrangements in the jail till all the prisoners accept them.”

The jailor said they have already talked to some of the inmates and warned them against resorting to violence. He,however, added that all three alleged rapists will have to stay with other prisoners,as they don’t have separate barracks. “We have also decided that the three would be given the jail food,” Doshi said.

Several jails across the state have witnessed attacks on rape accused, including in the Bijal Joshi gangrape case. The accused in this case were beaten up and subjected to humiliation by inmates of an Ahmeabad jail.

One Mangan Tarsadia, who was accused of rape by his daughter but later acquitted by the court, told The Indian Express that like any other rape accused or convict,he was also beaten up by the inmates when he was taken to the jail. Tarsadia said that no prisoner talked to him for a few days after his arrival at the jail and faced humiliation every now and then at the hands of the prisoners.
