Earlier this week, the body of a seven-year-old girl was found under a tin shed on the premises of a company in Rural Ahmedabad. The girl had multiple injuries on her body, including her face, waist and back. One of her ears appeared to have been smashed by a heavy object.

Superintendent of Police, Ahmedabad Rural, Om Prakash Jat rushed to the spot. In the next few hours, six separate teams, comprising as many as 60 personnel and led by Deputy SP of Sanand Division, Neelam Goswami, was formed. Besides personnel of various police stations, the teams also included members of the Local Crime Branch (LCB), Special Operations Group (SOG), and Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL).

Over 40 CCTV cameras around the crime scene were thoroughly examined and more than 100 people in the surrounding areas were questioned, according to a statement by the Ahmedabad Rural Police on Thursday. Labour colonies, factories and godowns around the crime scene were checked as well.

However, the investigation thus far did not reveal anything concrete.

Then, came Oreo. With the dog squad of the Rural Ahmedabad undergoing training, the two-and-a-half-year-old female Doberman, with badge number 529, was called in to help from Ahmedabad City Police.

Led by its handler, Assistant Sub-inspector Ajitsinh Dhummad, Oreo walked up to the tin shed where the girl’s body was found. After sniffing the area, the canine led the police team towards the hutment of the workers situated a short distance away, said an officer.

The dingy labour colony houses around 25 residences and many more people. Amid them, one suspect stood out for Oreo.

The man was identified as Ravindrakumar Chhotalalsingh Mojisav, 30, originally from Gaya in Bihar.

To confirm Oreo’s suspicion, the man was included in a line-up with eight other people. However, Oreo singled him out two more times, the handler told The Indian Express.

Mojisav was taken in for questioning during which he broke down and confessed to his crime, police said.

Police said the incident took place on April 7, adding the accused had tried to rape the minor before killing her. “The accused lured the girl with biscuits and took her to his room. He then molested her and attempted to rape her. When the child began screaming, the accused took a piece of a brick and repeatedly hit her on the head with it, causing the minor’s death,” according to a statement from the police on Thursday.
