Days after she was declared the BJP Lok Sabha candidate from the Union Territory (UT) of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Shiv Sena MP Kalaben Delkar formally joined the ruling party on Saturday along with her son Abhinav Delkar. Dipesh Tandel, the BJP chief of the union territory, welcomed them to the party along with other leaders at Atal Bhavan at Silvassa.
In a show of strength, the mother-son duo led a foot march with their supporters from their house in Sayli village to the local BJP headquarters ahead of the induction. They also urged the supporters to “forget old differences” and work with the ruling party.
Kalaben’s husband Mohan Delkar, a seven-term MP from the seat, was found dead on February 22, 2021, leaving behind a note in which he blamed nine persons for abetting his suicide. The Bombay High Court had later quashed a case registered against the nine persons, including Dadra and Nagar Haveli UT Administrator Praful Khoda Patel – a former BJP minister from Gujarat.
After switching sides, Kalaben on Saturday remembered her husband, and said, “My husband worked for 35 years for the union territory. We will follow his footsteps. We will also ensure that there is no internal conflict among us. We will strictly follow the instructions given to us by the higher-ups.”
“Delkar supporters and BJP workers will work hard for the party’s victory. We would also ensure that Prime Minister Narendra Modi wins for a third consecutive term. I assure the people of union territory that I will work on the issues faced by the people and try to bring solutions.”
Her son also recalled his father’s legacy as he raised the slogan — “Kaun hai Mohan Delkar? (Who is Mohan Delkar?) “Main hoon Mohan Delkar. (I am Mohan Delkar),” came the response from the crowd.
In his speech, he also praised PM Modi. “We were impressed by the foresightedness of PM Modi for taking the country on the development path for a better future. All our workers have come here with a positive mindset. Everybody knows that over the last few years, there has not been a good relationship between us. I want to remember my late father who spent his life for the people of union territory. I request all the leaders to come together and take his ideology ahead,” he stressed.
Natubhai Patel, former BJP MP from Dadra and Nagar Haveli, said, “We welcome the decision taken by the party higher-ups for giving ticket to sitting MP Kalaben Delkar for becoming the BJP candidate in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. Now the development phase will start. There are over 300 booths, 20 panchayats, and 15 wards. I want to tell the BJP workers and Delkar supporters, and leaders to work together for the victory of Kalaben Delkar. Like Abhinav said… we have to forget all our old issues, and work together.”
