Over 5.2 lakh children were enrolled in schools — from Balvatika till Class XI — across Gujarat on Thursday, the second day of the state government’s annual statewide school enrolment drive, Shala Praveshotsav.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel had on Wednesday launched the 21st edition of the initiative from a primary school at Biliamba village in Dang district. In all, the aim is to enrol over 32 lakh children during the three-day drive ending on Friday.
On Thursday, 1,52,733 children, below 6 years of age, were enrolled in Balvatika, 1,11,395 children in Class I, 1,67,638 children in Class IX and 94,780 in Class XI. Since Wednesday, around 10.94 lakh children have been enrolled across the state under the drive.
Patel on Thursday visited a ‘PM SHRI School’ (PM School for Rising India) in the tribal-dominated Chhota Udepur district as part of the statewide annual drive to boost enrolment of students.
During the last school enrolment drive, IAS officer Dhaval Patel, then posted as geology and mines commissioner, had flagged the “poor state of education” in Chhota Udepur primary schools. As a fallout of this, the state education department has this year introduced a detailed inspection and feedback form to be filled by every state official and politician visiting schools during the drive. The forms are to be submitted to the department in a sealed envelope.
At Chhota Udepur, the CM welcomed students by gifting them books, stationery, school bags and enrolled them in an anganwadi (child care centre), classes I, IX and XI at the PM SHRI School.
On the occasion, Patel asked teachers to maintain high quality of education and ensure students become ideal citizens after getting education, said an official release.
The CM also assessed students’ reading, writing and mathematical skills, as well as their academic proficiency in different subjects, it added.
Patel took a round of the school premises and checked the availability of infrastructure and other facilities for students, the release further said.
