While suggestions are flowing in to build a grand monument to Mahatma Gandhi at Dandi, the place where he challenged the British might 80 years ago by making salt, there are fears the proposed memorial may run into legal hurdles, for the proposed site falls into Coastal Regulation Zone.

While suggestions are flowing in to build a grand monument to Mahatma Gandhi at Dandi, the place where he challenged the British might 80 years ago by making salt, there are fears the proposed memorial may run into legal hurdles, for the proposed site falls into Coastal Regulation Zone.

The Gandhi Heritage Committee headed by Gopalkrishna Gandhi, which met in Ahmedabad on Friday, discussed the issue but reportedly said further discussions were need on it.

CRZ regulations prohibit any construction 500 meters inland from the high tide line. But at Dandi, the small picnic spot already exists there while the new “Gandhi tour” facilities being built as well as buildings belonging to the forest department lie within this distance from the sea.

The committee enjoys an advisory role and a final decision will have to be taken by the governments at various levels; central, state and local. Gandhi said the effort “requires joint collaborative action on the ground”.
