Cricket match postponed for Buddhism seminar

A premier league match organised by the Baroda Cricket Association was abruptly postponed at the D N Hall Cricket Ground morning on Tuesday to facilitate a community kitchen for the delegates for the upcoming International Seminar on Buddhism.

MSU official says the ground will be used to make breakfast and lunch for the delegates and participants

A premier league match organised by the Baroda Cricket Association (BCA) was abruptly postponed at the D N Hall Cricket Ground morning on Tuesday to facilitate a community kitchen for the delegates for the upcoming International Seminar on Buddhism. The Dalai Lama will be a guest at the seminar.

The move by the M S University officials left the BCA office bearers an irked lot as any construction on the cricket ground would damage the field.

P B Thumar,Director of the Physical Education Department and also a member of the panel that signed an MoU with the BCA for the maintenance of the ground, said it is just a matter of two or three days for the community kitchen.

“This pitch is maintained by BCA,but M S University can use the ground when it wants to. There would be no harm caused to the pitch. That is why the ground’s northern side has been used for the kitchen,” said Thumar.

According to M S University Chief Engineer N K Oza,the ground will be used to make breakfast and lunch for the delegates and participants.

Meanwhile, matches for the annual BCA one-day premiership league matches – which are played at the D N Hall cricket ground – have been postponed indefinitely.

“I learnt about the cancellation of today’s match over the phone in the morning as I was out of town. I do understand the magnitude of the event being hosted by M S University. But hosting such an event at the cost of the D N Hall cricket ground is unfortunate and uncalled for,” said BCA vice-president Samarjitsinh Gaekwad.

Meanwhile, the BCA officials are yet to decide when the matches will resume,as the extent of damage to the field has to be assessed before any match is organised.

The move was disappointing for the cricketing teams participating in the premiership matches,as the players hope to be selected for the upcoming Ranji season. BCA organises premier league matches ahead of the Ranji season every year to monitor the performance of players and pick up the best team.

Among the players include Under-19 and Under-22 categories along with the Ranji players from the city.
