The sleuths of the Surat crime branch seized a tiger skin and arrested four persons, including three tribal youths, from the neighbouring Navsari district of South Gujarat. Those arrested were remanded to police custody by a local court on Monday.

Acting on a tip-off,the crime branch officials, led by police sub-inspector S M Sumra, intercepted three persons near Hanuman Temple in Parvat Patia area on Sunday evening and found a tiger skin in their bag. The crime branch officials immediately called FSL officials who reached on the spot and took samples for lab analysis.

Police arrested the trio, identified as Vijay Chaudhary,Jayenti Rathod and Sunil Patel, all residents of Vansda in Navsari district. The cops also arrested one more person, identified as Narayan Singh Rajput,a resident of Althan village in Surat, who was allegedly the purchaser. The policemen produced all the four before court to obtain 10 days of remand. The court granted three days remand till August 8. Sumra said,“Narayan Singh is a localite and he knew many people in Surat. He was likely to purchase the tiger skin at Rs 50,000 and, later, after finding a suitable customer,he would sell it at a higher rate. We will try and find out where was the tiger skin procured from.” Police suspect an inter-state gang to be behind the entire racket of selling and purchasing animal skins.
