Cop beaten up,probe begins

A head constable with the Paddhari police station was assaulted and looted by two unidentified persons off the Jamnagar highway near the Indian Oil Corporation godown late on Tuesday night.

A head constable with the Paddhari police station was assaulted and looted by two unidentified persons off the Jamnagar highway near the Indian Oil Corporation godown late on Tuesday night.

The incident occurred a little after 11 pm when Bhartdan Gadhvi (53),a resident of Railnagar in Rajkot city was on his way home from Manhapur village,where he had gone to meet a relative.

Preliminary investigation by the Gandhigram police revealed that two persons had intercepted Gadhvi and demanded money from him. When Gadhvi told them that he is a policeman,the duo assaulted him with sticks.

They reportedly said: “The policemen beat up the bootleggers very badly. Today we will beat up a policeman.”

The assailants decamped with Gadhvi’s motorcycle,ATM card,cellphone and clothes,and left him severely wounded. “Gadhvi was badly beaten up. The bones of both his legs and hands were broken,” said a Gandhigram police officer.

The police said Gadhvi managed to crawl up to the highway by dawn in his semi-nude condition where he was helped by a passer-by,who contacted the family. Gadhvi was finally shifted to the Rajkot Civil Hospital around 8 am on Wednesday,the police added.

The Gandhigram police said they have begun an investigation into the assault. Gadhvi was on duty at a school in Morbi in connection with the ongoing board exams on the day of the assault.
