Opposition Congress on Friday staged yet another walkout from the Gujarat Legislative Assembly over the issue of tabling the reports of Comptroller & Auditor General of India (CAG) in the Assembly by the state government on the last day of the Budget Session, preventing any discussion on their findings in the House.
Immediately after the CAG reports were tabled in the House on Friday, senior Congress leader Shaktisinh Gohil raised a Point of Order, objecting to the fact that the CAG reports were tabled on the last day of the Budget Session. Gohil said that CAG was an independent agency and when the state is reeling under price rise of various commodities, discussion on the findings of CAG would have been very important and relevant.
Gohil added that as per the past traditions, the CAG reports should have been tabled in the first week of the Budget Session.
The Point of Order was, however, rejected by Speaker Vajubhai Vala, while citing a previous order of the then Speaker that stated that by tabling the CAG reports on the last day of the Budget Session, no constitutional or statutory rule was violated.
Following this, Congress MLAs had started sloganeering, holding placards, in the House. Several Congress MLAs protested against price rise in the state by wearing garlands made from lemons and chillies.
After repeated warnings from the Speaker, the pandemonium continued, leading to the Speaker suspending all Congress MLAs, except Shankersinh Vaghela and Shaktisinh Gohil, for the day. Following this, all Congress MLAs, including Gohil, walked out of the House. Subsequently, Vaghela thanked the Speaker for his support during the Budget Session and then joined Congress MLAs while walking out of the House.
The Budget Session of the Assembly concluded on Friday.
