Both the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Monday attacked the BJP government in Gujarat after a scathing report by IAS officer Dhaval Patel revealed the poor standards of education among primary schools in the state’s tribal areas.
In his report submitted to Education Secretary Vinod Rao with a copy to the director of primary education and administration and education officials of Chhota Udepur district based on his observations during Shala Praveshotsav — the annual enrolment drive, Geology and Mining commissioner Dhaval Patel had highlighted the “rotten” state of education in the government primary schools of Gujarat.
Applauding Patel for bringing out the reality, Gujarat Congress president Shaktisinh Gohil said he did not consider Shala Praveshotsav as a mere formality, but also talked to students and analysed their answer sheets. “The reality in Gujarat is that in the tribal areas Class 7 and 8 students cannot single digit subtraction, simple multiplication but cry when asked these questions. Such is the bad level of education witnessed in the government primary schools. The IAS officer, who himself is a Gujarati, writes that education quality is very poor at all the levels,” Gohil stated in a video message released by the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee.
Requesting the government to take it seriously, he stated, “I hope that the government does not hide the real facts but takes it seriously and should apologise to the public. Today’s BJP leaders have studied in the government schools set up by the Congress, but (now) the situation of government schools in Gujarat is such that people are forced to send their children to private schools charging hefty fees. This is a question of the future of Gujarati children.”
AAP Gujarat president Isudan Gadhvi took to Twitter to attack the BJP. “It is injustice to the tribal areas. This is the reality of not only Chhota Udepur, but the entire tribal areas. No school is good. It is a conspiracy by the BJP government to make children of poor tribals remain uneducated. Who is responsible for this? It is the BJP government for the past 28 years in Gujarat. The BJP and their ministers are responsible for this,” he said in a video message.
