The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) officials evicted the students and the teachers and sealed Chhatrapati Shivaji Marathi School again after the students broke the SMC seal on Tuesday, following the first attempt on Friday. On learning that the regular school activities had started, SMC officials stuck a notice on the school’s main gate prohibiting the entry of students and school staffers in the school premises.

The school is located in Udhna’s Jalaram Nagar society and has over 900 students. Imparting education from Class 1 to Class 12, the school was sealed in April 2024 by the SMC officials following orders of the Gujarat High Court. The members of the residential society committee filed a petition with the court alleging that the school was built on the society’s common open plot in 2017.

On July 12, some students armed with hammers and iron rods broke the SMC seal but the SMC officials, Udhna zone, reached the spot and put up another seal.

SMC Udhna Zone executive engineer Sujal Prajapati said that a notice had been put up prohibiting the entry in the school premises following the regular routine that started in the school. “We will give an application to Godadara police this evening and request them to strictly instruct the school authorities,” he said, adding that there will be legal actions if not done so.

Surat District Education Officer (DEO) Bhagirathsinh Parmar said that the school has been instructed to give leaving certificates to the students and “we will help students to get admission in nearby schools”. “We will put a proposal to shift the school to some other property so that their education would not be hampered,” Parmar said.

The court in its 2022 order mentioned that SMC should intervene between the society residents and school authorities and take legal actions based on the records. SMC officials said that the school authorities had no document for plan approval from SMC, building use certificate and land documents, whereas the residents submitted necessary documents.
