City-based arms supplier arrested in Mumbai

A Vadodara-based firearms supplier was arrested from the Mumbai Central area in south Mumbai for allegedly possessing sophisticated pistols and cartridges meant for delivery in the city,the police said on Thursday.

Sultan Sattar Mirashi (19) had brought the firearms in a bag from Mansor in Madhya Pradesh to deliver them to a group in Mumbai,authorities said,adding that the weapons were supposed to be delivered during the election period.

Acting on a tip off,the police laid a trap near Maratha Mandir theatre at Mumbai Central when Mirashi arrived there last night carrying the firearms,Joint Commissioner of Police Rakesh Maria said.

“Four 0.32 bore pistols,25 cartridges and one spare magazine were recovered from him. He has been working for one Shaikh Saab,who is the main supplier for the last two years,” he added.

He said they had received a tip-off that the weapons would be delivered last week and that they had mounted a watch since then.

Besides visiting the city on several occasions,the accused had theft cases lodged against him in Vadodara in 2007 and 2008,and had delivered weapons to other states earlier,Maria added.

Mirashi,who is a tailor ,has been remanded in police custody till October 21.
