As many as 1,46,841 cases were registered in May this year,which led to the recovery of penalty to the tune of Rs 4.98 crore Instances of ticketless travel and other irregularities on the Western Railway went up by more than half in May this year as compared to the corresponding period in 2008,according to a Western Railway release issued on Tuesday. Acting on this,railway authorities recovered Rs 2,64,173. Also in May,1,455 beggars and unauthorised hawkers were apprehended,out of whom 922 were evicted from the railway premises,the release said. Of the unauthorised occupants,57 were charged and Rs 16,134 was realised as penalty. Out of 476 people prosecuted,453 were fined Rs 36,500. The remaining 23 people were sent to jail,the release added. During May 2009,railway officials conducted 158 checks on touts and other anti-social elements. As a result,550 people were apprehended and prosecuted under the Indian Railway Act,1989. Out of them,538 were slapped fine of Rs 43,985 while the remaining 12 were jailed. As many as 848 beggars were removed from railway premises,the release said.
