The Union Budget presented by Finance Minister P Chidambaram Thursday paved the way for development of Dholera in Ahmedabad district as one of the two smart industrial cities.
Although the Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR) has not attracted any major investment,it is tipped to become one of the biggest industrial hubs with smart community living facilities and high environment efficiency.
Stating that work on the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) has begun in earnest,Chidambaram assured that additional funds would be provided,if required. …the project has made rapid progress. Plans for seven new cities have been finalised and work on two new smart industrial cities at Dholera,Gujarat and Shendra Bidkin,Maharashtra will start during 2013-14… I wish to make it clear that we shall provide,if required, additional funds during 2013-14 within the share of the Government of India in the overall outlay for the project, Chidambaram said in his Budget speech.
This assumes significance as 62 per cent of the DMIC project runs through Gujarat.
