Ahmedabad: Premier industry bodies are gearing up to take up with the Gujarat government the issue of high VAT structure on petrol and diesel in the state.
“We had presented our case earlier also,and would again press the government for a positive review of VAT structure on fuel,” CII (Gujarat chapter) Chairman Yatindra Sharma said on Friday.
All-India Motor Transport Congress vice-president Hiten Vasant said,“The government should slash the VAT structure on fuel for the betterment of industry. They should bring the rates at par with other states.” He added they had made several representations to the government from various forums.
There is 23 per cent VAT on petrol and 21 on diesel in Gujarat,besides two and three per cent cess respectively,according to a PSU oil company official. The high VAT in the state makes the fuel costlier here as compared to other states.

Sadiq Jamal encounter: Final hearing on July 30
Ahmedabad: The Gujarat High Court has kept the final hearing on a petition urging investigation into the 2003 Sadiq Jamal encounter case for July 30. The petitioner had requested an expeditious hearing. Sadiq,a Bhavnagar resident,was shot dead by Ahmedabad police near Galaxy Cinema in Naroda on January 13,2003. His brother,Shabbir Jamal Mehtar,has demanded a probe into the encounter saying it was stage-managed.

Two groups clash,police fire teargas shells
Ahmedabad: Tension mounted this morning in the walled city area of Jamalpur when two groups belonging to different communities clashed over a petty issue,resorting to stone pelting. The police fired three teargas shells to disperse the crowd,which had turned violent. Seven people from both sides were detained. Those who sustained minor injuries were discharged after preliminary treatment at a hospital.

AMC begins sealing ‘illegal’ party plots
Ahmedabad: Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation authorities on Friday began sealing party plots across the city that were functioning without the necessary permission. Lack of parking facilities as well as irregular construction were cited as reasons for the sealing. A total of 79 party plots were sealed of which most were in the western zone of the city in Sola Road,Naranpura,Memnagar and Bhuyangdev areas.

Sahajanand College fined Rs 15 lakh,gets a showcause
AHMEDABAD: Gujarat University (GU) on Friday issued showcause notice to Sahajanand College of Arts and Commerce,asking authorities to exempt Principal Ghanshyam Patel from his additional charges. The college was also fined Rs 15 lakh for not conducting admissions for Gujarati medium commerce and arts courses despite two reminders. GU also extended permission to start nine affiliated colleges of Bachelors of Business Administration (BBA) and Bachelors of Computer Application (BCA) during its Syndicate meeting today.

Two held on bribery charges in Panchmahals
VADODARA: The Vadodara Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Friday caught a deputy mamlatdar of Khanpur taluka in Panchmahals district on bribery charges. ACB officers said Deputy Mamlatdar Shankar Baria and clerk Jetha Bhagat had demanded Rs 1,000 from Punja Machaar,a casual labourer in Khanpur,for providing him an income certificate.
