Houston: The Ford Foundation has honoured noted activist Ella R Bhatt for her courageous work to “improve the lives of most oppressed women workers” in India. Bhatt is the founder of the Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA),a trade union for poor self-employed women workers with over 10 lakh members. She received the Ford Foundation Visionaries Awards along with 11 other people. The awards carry a USD 100,000 cash prize.

Disproportionate assets: Cops suspended

VADODARA: Two head constables of the Local Crime Branch were suspended on Wednesday for allegedly having disproportionate assets to their known source of income. Superintendent of Police Gagandeep Gambhir said an inquiry will be conducted in the matter. While the police refused to reveal the property owned by the two policemen,sources said that one of them was seen driving a Maruti Swift car. LCB sources said both the policemen have been in service for 10 year.

Woman dies in ‘accidental’ fire

Ahmedabad: A woman died reportedly after a fire broke out in her kitchen while she was cooking at her Keshavnagar house on Tuesday night. Police said that her in-laws claimed that it was an accidental fire while her parents alleged that she was set ablaze by her in-laws. Her husband was reportedly not at home when the incident took place. Police have registered a case of accidental death and further investigation is on.

Dumper driver dies in mishap

Ahmedabad: The driver of a dumper died when his vehicle carrying scrap overturned and rammed into a mini truck near Adalaj Crossroads in the early hours of Wednesday. The driver died on the spot and five persons sitting in the mini-truck sustain injuries. The injured were rushed to the Gandhinagar Civil Hospital.

Angadia worker shot at

AHMEDABAD: An Angadia employee was shot at by two unidentified persons in Sarkhej area of the city on Wednesday morning. Police said the incident took place soon after the victim opened his shop at a commercial complex near Ujala Circle. Ahmedabad District DySP MM Malek said the assailants fled the scene after firing at him and that there was no attempt to rob him. The victim has been admitted to the V S Hospital and further investigation is on,they added.

Woman hangs self

Ahmedabad: A 26-year-old woman reportedly committed suicide by hanging herself at her house in Ghatlodia area of the city on Wednesday. Police said her parents were not disclosing the reason behind her suicide. They have learnt that the woman was facing some problems outside her family,which might have forced her take the extreme step. No suicide note was found. Police have registered a case of accidental case.
