Breaking Bad in Surat flat: Chemist among 6 held for ‘cooking up’ banned MD

On Tuesday, the team of Police Inspector C H Panara of the State Monitoring Cell (SMC) received confidential information about a man in alleged possession of narcotics in the form of MD. Police also learnt that the man’s accomplice was a chemist who was able to cook up the banned drug. All this was said to be going on at an apartment in Mansarovar Residency located in Kathor village of Surat City.

The SMC conducted a raid on the premises and found 12.53 grams of Mephedrone (MD) worth Rs 1.253 lakh, police said. Further, they also found precursor chemicals used in the illegal manufacture of the drug, including Cathinone (analogue), 4-Methylcathinone, Buphedrone, Methylcathinone or N-Dimethylcathinone. This brought the total seizure amount to Rs 1.638 lakh.

The arrested accused have been identified as Munaf Qureshi and chemist Ketan Patel, besides four other persons.

A statement from the SMC on Wednesday said that Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) results and questioning of the accused revealed that they used to procure the chemicals and manufacture the MD themselves.

Apart from Munaf alias Munna Dadu Qureshi and Ketan alias Ketan Zaver Rafaliya, the SMC also apprehended four other accused, including Naran Bhagwan Rathod and Shahbaz Mehboob Saiyyed, the co-accused in the alleged racket, besides Mehul Deva Chohla and Sahil Hanif Belim who are accused of peddling the MD, on Wednesday.

The seventh accused, named Atik, is still at large and efforts are on to apprehend him. Further investigation is underway.
