Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar on Friday expressed “confidence” that the Australian government would “probe” the apprehension of its universities that have decided to ban applications of Indian students from six states, including Gujarat, and “resolve” the issue.
The minister, who arrived in the state on a two-day visit on Friday and visited four villages adopted by him in Narmada district, also described the ongoing controversy over the inauguration of the new Parliament building as “unfortunate”.
Speaking to mediapersons in Narmada, Jaishankar fielded questions about the “concerns raised” by the Australian universities about people from India being involved in securing jobs on student visas.
At least five Australian universities have placed bans or restrictions on students from Indian states, amid a surge in fraudulent applications from South Asia seeking to work, and not study, in the country. They include Punjab, Haryana, Gujarat, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.

Jaishankar said, “There has been news that they (Australian universities) feel that there is something amiss… It is their apprehension and they will (hold a) probe into it. It happened in Canada and also in the US some time ago… I am confident that the government (of Australia) will take appropriate action.”

“Our intention is that the real students should not face any problems. It is not true that everyone is doing it. There might have been some people, they will investigate as per process. Governments do not run on rumours. We are both responsible governments and will resolve the issue as required…”, he added.

On the controversy over Opposition parties refusing to attend the inauguration of the new Parliament building because it was being inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Jaishankar said, “I feel that the inauguration is a celebration of democracy. It should be taken in the spirit… It is unfortunate that this has turned into a controversy. It is the attempt of some people to turn this into a controversy but there should be some boundary even in politics.”

The Opposition parties contend that President Droupadi Murmu should do inaugurate the new Parliament building as she is not only the head of state, but also an integral part of Parliament as she summons, prorogues and addresses it.

During the day, Jaishankar laid the foundation stone of two smart anganwadis and inaugurated projects coming up in villages he had adopted in Narmada under the Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana by using his Member of Parliament Local Area Development (MPLAD) funds. The minister represents Gujarat in the Rajya Sabha.

Jaishankar visited Vyadhar village in Tilakwada taluka, Amadla in Garudeshwar, Bhadod in Sagbara and Mal Samot in Dediapada taluka. He also stopped by the Ekta skill development centre at Ekta Nagar (Kevadia). In the evening, he visited the gymnastics centre being constructed in the Chhotubhai Purani degree college in Rajpipla.

At Vyadhar in Tilakwada, Jaishankar, accompanied by Chhota Udepur BJP MP Gita Rathwa, laid the foundation stone for two smart aanganwadis. In Amalda in Garudeshwar, he surveyed the health and wellness centre.

Addressing local residents in Amalda, Jaishankar said, “It has been four years since I became a Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat… Of these, two years have gone by in the Covid-19 pandemic, so I have not been able to come as often as I would have liked, but I will visit often now.”

“I have stressed on health and also attempted to take forward fitness for youth… We have improved the quality of Garudeshwar hospital… installed X-ray van, set up a nari shakti kendra and a medical college in Rajpipla… The difference between the Narendra Modi government and the governments of the past is that we do whatever we say,” he added.

Speaking about the projects coming up in his adopted villages, Jaishankar told mediapersons, “After the pandemic, I thought I should contribute MPLAD funds to health projects… It is very important. The nutrition of young children is very necessary for our progress.”

Maintaining that “people are curious about the progress India is making”, Jaishankar said: “The scale of digital deliveries in India… the Garib Kalyan Ann Yojana, which is bigger than the entire population of Europe; Ujjwala yojana is bigger than the population of Germany while the number of beneficiaries under the Pradan Mantri Awas Yojana is equal to the population of Russia… The world recognises that this is a different India, different Prime Minister.”
