Booklets on national heroes to develop reading habits in Vadodara kids

To develop reading habits in schoolchildren, the Vadodara Municipal School Board (VMSB) has decided to give its schools booklets on historical, mythical characters and national heroes this year.

To develop reading habits in schoolchildren, the Vadodara Municipal School Board (VMSB) has decided to give its schools booklets on historical, mythical characters and national heroes this year. The board will also provide schools with CDs on the lives of a few of these personalities.

All the 104 VMSB-run schools will get a set of 132 booklets on life and works of characters ranging from Ashtavakra to Bhagat Singh and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. These books are of Balbharati Books Series and are considered to be children’s literature.

“We have observed there are books in school libraries but not many students read them. A possible reason for this is these books are too bulky for students to begin with. Therefore,as an attempt to make students develop interest in reading,we have decided to gift each of the schools the booklets,” said VMBS chief Keyur Rokadiya.

Libraries were formally set up in primary schools in the last decade and schools had received literature for all age groups. However,Rokadiya said in many schools, these books have been reduced to show-pieces. “Through these booklets,we want students to become favourably disposed towards reading,” he said.

The average length of Bal Bharati Series booklet is around 50 pages. The board has already purchased the booklets at the cost of around Rs 79,000 and are being supplied to schools. They will be put on display at schools during three-day Shala Praveshotsav, beginning June 28 across the state.
