The indefinite strike by Veraval Bar Association entered third day on Thursday. The lawyers have been demanding appointment of joint district judge at Veraval,a post that has been vacant for more than 2.5 years now.

A D Moghal was the last joint district judge to serve at Veraval. After Moghal’s transfer in mid-2007,the post has been vacant. As a result, the proceedings at this court with 16 staff members, including registrar and peon have been severely affected. In absence of the judge, not a single civil appeal has proceeded and cases related to undertrials, land acquisitions and accident claims have not been heard during this entire period.

“Joint district court at Veraval covers four talukas — Talala,Una,Kodinar,Maliya and Sutrapada. During this time,no civil appeal from these talukas has proceeded in the court in the absence of the judge,” said Kanubhai Joshi,a senior advocate and member of the Veraval Bar Association.

He also added,“As per rule,if the post remains vacant for three years, the court can stop existing.”

The Veraval Bar Association on Thursday wrote to Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court to take an urgent step. The members said in the last 2.5 years many a times several representations have been made in this regard to registrar general of the High Court, but in vain.
