Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), Ban Ki-moon will visit Vadodara on Sunday to inaugurate the country’s largest canal-top solar power plant constructed atop a branch canal of the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited (SSNNL) between city’s Sama and Chhani localities.
Ban Ki-moon is a keynote speaker at the inaugural session of the seventh edition of the Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors’ Summit that starts Sunday in Gandhinagar. He will arrive in Vadodara in the evening to inaugurate the 3.5-kilometre long power plant that started operating late October last year.
The canal-top power plant is country’s first with a total 483 solar tablets of 6.5 X 2.3 metres laid atop it. The SSNNL will use it as a captive power plant, officials said.
The solar panel will generate electricity that will be primarily channeled through power grids to run five pumping generators situated along Saurashtra branch canals to draw water and supply them for irrigation purpose. Work on the project started in March this year.
Hyderabad-based Mega Engineering & Infrastructure Limited, which was offered the contract to construct the plant will supply 16.2 million unit power annually as per the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractual agreement with the SSNNL. A similar 1MW canal-top project is located at Kadi which is 750-metre long..
