AUDA for satellite towns to ease pressure on Ahmedabad

The Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA) will soon begin construction of roads in Dahegam,Mahemdabad,Sanand,Kalol and Bareja to develop them as satellite towns at an initial cost of Rs 15 crore.

The Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA) will soon begin construction of roads in Dahegam,Mahemdabad,Sanand,Kalol and Bareja to develop them as satellite towns at an initial cost of Rs 15 crore. The project aims to arrest migration of people and reduce pressure on Ahmedabad.

These towns, located within a radius of 30 to 40 kms of Ahmedabad with a population ranging from 50,000 to 60,000 or more, could be the ideal locations for checking migration to Ahmedabad.

According to AUDA authorities, civic amenities in the state’s commercial capital with a population exceeding 60 lakh are becoming unmanageable because of continuous influx of the people.

Considering this,it would be worthwhile if these towns were developed by providing basic infrastructure like roads, sewerage system, storm water system, drinking water and proper power supply, apart from educational and other facilities to make them attractive.

Authorities are of the view that if proper facilities are made available, many people even from Ahmedabad may like to shift there because of better environment and better quality of life. These five towns,a few of them falling outside Ahmedabad district, were included in AUDA sometime ago by the state Urban Development Department.

AUDA chairman Dharmendra Shah, who is also a sitting BJP member in the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, said that many employment generating activities could also start in these towns with the availability of infrastructure facilities.

Kalol and Sanand,he said, were already developing as industrial townships with a few industries around Kalol and Tata’s Nano car project being set up in Sanand.

He further said these towns could not develop because the municipal committees there did not have adequate funds to undertake these activities. AUDA,he said, has now decided to set up infrastructure facilities from its own funds.

Senior town planner Neela Munshi said that to ensure planned development and attract people to move to these towns, instead of rushing to Ahmedabad, town planning schemes were being prepared. Two town planning schemes for Kalol have already been approved by the state government and other three schemes are under preparation. She said that survey work for TP schemes in other towns would start soon.
