Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Ramdas Athawale on Wednesday said that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is not against Muslims, Dalits or tribals but for all and therefore, it is very important to implement it.
“I want to tell the people from the Muslim community that if this law is framed, it is not going to be against them. There is no substance in the false propagation being done by some Opposition parties that this law will be against the Muslim community,” Athawale, also the president of Republic Party of India (RPI), said.
“I want to appeal to all the parties that this law is for all. It is to strengthen the unity of the country. So, keeping aside politics, all should support this law,” he added.
While replying to a question related to tribals and UCC, Athawale said, “This law is not against tribals. It is not against Dalits. It is not against Hindus. It is not against Muslims. This law is for all.”
On atrocities against Dalits, Athawale said that while atrocities do happen, many upper caste people are also coming forward to support the community. He cited the figures of inter-caste marriages in Gujarat in 2022-23 and 2021-22. “In 2022-23, 1,117 inter-caste marriages took place in Gujarat. The same figure for 2021-22 was 1,020.”
On the prevailing political situation in the country and the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Athawale said, “While the Opposition has many leaders who want to be the Prime Minister, like Mamata Banerjee, Arvind Kejriwal, Nitish Kumar, Akhilesh Yadav, Sharad Pawar, K Chandrashekhar Rao and Uddhav Thackeray, BJP-led National Democratic Alliance has one clear leader in Narendra Modi.”
He added that the NDA will win the Lok Sabha elections by more than 325 seats and Modi will become the PM once again and his party (RPI) will support him. In reply to a question, Athawale said that a Maharashtra-like situation may come up in Bihar as well since there is a lot of discontent among the MLAs of Janata Dal (United), as “Nitish Kumar has changed sides from RJD to BJP and then back to RJD”. He indicated that such MLAs may rebel.
