Five months after quitting the Congress to join the BJP, Amul’s director and veteran leader Juvansinh Chauhan on Tuesday returned to the partyfold in the presence of state Congrss president Shaktisinh Gohil at Rajiv Bhavan in Ahmedabad.

Chauhan, who had unsuccessfully contested the 2022 Gujarat Assembly polls as a Congress candidate from Mehmadabad, also brought back his supporters into the party. Gohil said that Chauhan had been “disappointed” due to the “constant interference of the BJP” in matters of Amul Dairy.

Chauhan, a native of Modaj in Mehmadabad in Kheda district, is a two-term Amul director and was among the four Congress directors who had defected to the BJP in February. Within three days, the BJP had deployed its majority power in Amul and elected Vipul Patel and former Congress MLA Kanti Sodha Parmar as chairman and vice-chairman of the dairy, respectively.

At the event to welcome Chauhan back, Gohil said, “Amul is the pride of Gujarat. The Congress government in the state ensured that the cooperative grew into a leading dairy cooperative in the world… However, the BJP has now taken control of the board and is interfering in every matter. It left Chauhan disappointed and he returned to the party.”

Chauhan’s defection along with three other directors in February had meant that the Congress till now held two of the nine seats it had won in the 2020 polls, among the total 13 seats in Amul. While four of the nine seats belonging to the Congress was taken over by the BJP in February, the remaining two went to the BJP over a period of time.
Chauhan’s return to the party takes the tally for the Congress in Amul to three, including Rajendrasinh Parmar and Sanjay Patel.
