The Gir Somnath Police on Tuesday said that it will initiate an enquiry into a complaint filed by local BJP leader Rakesh Devani against his colleague, Junagadh MP Rajesh Chudasama, claiming that he faces threats from the MP.

The complaint against Chudasama comes when the MP’s plea, seeking anticipatory bail in the case of alleged suicide of Dr Atul Chag is pending before the Gujarat High Court.
Deveani, a builder based out of Veraval, gave a written complaint to Manoharsinh Jadeja, superintendent of police (SP) of Gir Somnath, on Sunday. In his complaint, Devani, who is member of the executive of Gir Somnath district unit of the BJP, referred to a statement Chudasama reportedly made at a ceremony organised in Prachi near Veraval on June 19 after he won election to Junagadh seat for the third time on June 4.

In a purported video of his speech at, Chudasama said: “Whether BJP sets the record straight or not, I am not going to spare those who have bothered me during these five years.”
Referring to this speech, Devani said in his complaint that after Dr Chag’s alleged suicide the latter’s hospital in Veraval on February 12 last year, he had given a statement to the media, appealing to the police and state home department to spare no one responsible for driving Dr Chag to suicide. Not only that, the complaint states that though the MP and his father Naran Chudasama were booked under IPC sections 306 (abetment to suicide) 506(2) (criminal intimidation) and 114 (abettor present when offence is committed) on May 15, 2023, neither of them have been arrested so far.

The BJP leader said that on his social media account, he had demanded that Chudasama should not only be denied a ticket to seek re-election from Junagadh Parliamentary seat for the second time but had also appealed to voters not to vote for him after BJP nominated him as its candidate for third consecutive time. Devani said that he had aired similar views on TV debates also.

“Thus, I had worked against this Rajesh Chudasama in the last Lok Sabha election and at the Prachi public felicitation event, he had openly issued a threat by saying, ‘Whether BJP sets the record straight or not, I am not going to spare those who have bothered me during these five years.’ As I had worked against him, I am feeling intimidated and I apprehend that this Rajesh Chudasama, through his henchmen, will assault me anyhow,” Devani has stated in his complaint, adding he apprehends that his family could also be harmed due to this tussle.

Following Devani’s complaint, Gir Somnath police have initiated an enquiry. “We have asked Veraval police station to conduct an enquiry into the complaint filed by Devani though no FIR has been registered on the basis of Devani. During enquiry, we will also call Devani to furnish evidence supporting his complaint,” Jadeja told The Indian Express.
