Ahmedabad anganwadis lack basic infrastructure

The study revealed that the anganwadi centres especially in Ahmedabad district are in a deplorable condition.

AS A part of the study on Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) conducted under the ‘UK, Leverhulme International Collaboration’ research on ‘continuity and change in Indian federalism’, the team had revealed a ‘deplorable condition’ of anganwadi centres in Ahmedabad. The research project is a collaboration between three Universities in UK and three in India.

The team, including Prof Rekha Saxena from University of Delhi, along with human rights activist and SC lawyer Dr Sushant Kanungo was on a five-day visit to Gujarat to study the working of centrally sponsored scheme with special reference to ICDS. The anganwadi centres in two districts, Ahmedabad and Bhavnagar, were a part of this study.

“The study revealed that the anganwadi centres especially in Ahmedabad district are in a deplorable condition. The centres are housed in poorly ventilated rented small rooms mostly functioning without supply of electricity and other basic amenities like toilet, drinking water, kitchen facilities and others,” said Prof Saxena.

However, the condition of Bhavnagar district is better.
