34 deaths in state due to lion and leopard attacks in two years: Minister

In 2021, two deaths were reported due to lion attacks while this increased to five in the following year. However, 15 and 12 deaths were reported from leopard attacks in 2021 and 2022, respectively. As many as 21 and 19 persons were injured due to lion attacks in 2021 and 2022, respectively while these numbers from leopard attacks were 105 and 84 persons, respectively.

Further, as per the government rules, a compensation of Rs 1.53 crore was provided to the kin of the 34 deceased persons and another Rs 14.6 lakh was given to the injured persons. The compensation to kin of all the deceased was Rs 33 lakh in lion attacks and Rs 1.2 crore in leopard attacks for both the years. Similarly, over Rs 2.27 lakh and Rs 12.33 lakh were given to 189 persons injured from leopard attacks.
