Police said that they have registered a case under various sections of Indian Penal Code and Gujarat Police Act for charges such as assaulting public servant, wrongful confinement, rioting, extortion by putting a person in fear of death, criminal intimidation, unlawful assembly, threat of injury to public servant, voluntarily causing hurt and assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharging his duty.
Three persons were arrested after IAS officer and Director of Fisheries Nitin Sangwan was allegedly held hostage and assaulted by a group of people near Dharoi dam in Sabarkantha district where he went for inspection of a fishery camp earlier this week. A local court has sent the accused to police custody till Friday.
According to police, the incident happened on March 6 when Sangwan was at the Ambavad fishery camp near Dharoi dam for inspection after suspecting some irregularities by fishing contractors.
According to sub-inspector NR Umat of Vadali police station, Sangwan and his team had a verbal altercation with fishing contractor Babu Parmar and his men over the alleged irregularities. Following this, Parmar and his men allegedly assaulted Sangwan and his team, holding them hostage. Sangwan, who fainted during the episode, was taken to hospital, the inspector said.
One of the subordinate officers of Sangwan filed a complaint with Vadali police station.
Umat added that the accused also got in writing from the government officials that a ruckus happened between them and a fishermen group and that it was resolved. They also made a video of the same.
The ruckus and alleged attack, police said, happened on a boat of Babu Parmar that was used by the officials for inspection in the middle of the water body.
