Fire at the SVP Hospital (Express File)Even as 9 patients lost their lives in a hospital fire in Jaipur, Ahmedabad saw two fires in different hospitals on consecutive days. One was at Vrundavan Children’s Hospital in the Paldi area of the city on Sunday, and the other at SVP Hospital on Monday.
A fire broke out at Vrundavan Children’s Hospital at about 2 pm on Sunday. Residents of apartment buildings behind the hospital first saw and reported the smoke coming out of the hospital, leading to the Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services (AFES) rushing to the spot.
The fire was in the consultation room of the hospital, which was closed as it was a Sunday. Fire department officials said that there were patients in other parts of the hospital and that all 13 had been evacuated and safely moved to another private hospital before the firefighters arrived on the scene. No injuries or casualties were reported. An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
Less than 24 hours later, on Monday morning around 9 am, a fire was reported from the premises of SVP Hospital, which is run by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation Medical Education Trust (AMCMET).
While the hospital’s own fire officer was the first on scene, the plumes of smoke were found to be coming out of the laundry building, which is a separate structure located 8 metres from the actual hospital.
Since it is the largest civic-run hospital in Ahmedabad, senior officers as well as councillors arrived on the scene. Firefighters were called in, and they found the smoke emanating from the electrical duct of the laundry building. Firefighting operations were wound up within 20 minutes without any injuries or loss of life.
SVP Hospital CEO Saurabh Patel told The Indian Express, “There were fumes emanating from the laundry building. Our fire officer began firefighting operations. There were just fumes and no blaze. There was no major damage or injuries in the incident.”
