2 detained with gold to tune of Rs 8.57cr in Surat

During questioning, the accused disclosed that they ran a gold refinery and were on their way to their unit after collecting gold from different shops.

Two people were detained with gold worth Rs 8.57 crore in Surat, said police on Friday.

According to the Saroli police officials, the incident took place on Thursday night when the two accused, identified as Hiren Bhatti (31) and Maganbhai Dhameliya (65), were travelling in a car and were stopped for checking.

While searching the car, the police seized gold weighing 14.50kg, in the form of biscuits and small pieces, from the accused. During questioning, the accused disclosed that they ran a gold refinery and were on their way to their unit after collecting gold from different shops.

When the police officials asked for relevant documents, the accused were unable to provide satisfactory answers, based on which they were detained and taken to police station, said Saroli Police Inspector S R Vekariya. “We are working on the statements given by them. A probe is on in the matter,” Vekariya said. ENS
