(File) Two persons have been arrested after a Dalit man lost his thumb while warding off a sword attack by upper caste men in Patan Sunday. The attack followed a dispute over a tennis ball between the victim’s child and the accused.
An FIR naming six accused — Kuldipsinh Rajput, Siddhrajsinh, Raju alias Rajdip, Darbar, Jashvantsinh Rajput, Chakuba Lakshmanji and Mahendrasinh — and an “unknown” person for rioting and voluntarily causing hurt with dangerous weapons has been lodged at the Kakoshi police station.
The incident took place when the tennis ball the eight-year old son of Kirtibhai Dahyabhai, the victim, was playing with strayed across a ground where several, including the accused, were playing cricket Sunday afternoon. According to the complaint, the accused Kuldipsinh got angry and scolded the boy, following which the complainant Dhirajkumar, the victim’s brother, intervened.
After the completion of the match, one of the accused called and threatened Dhirajkumar and asked him to meet him on the ground. Several Rajput youths had assembled by the time Dhirajkumar, who was accompanied by Kirtibhai and another relative, arrived at the ground.
After the matter was settled, Dhirajkumar returned home, while Kirtibhai went to a tea stall. But the complaint says that around 6:30 pm, Dhirajkumar learnt that his brother was attacked at the tea stall. “After I left thinking the matter had been settled, the Rajput youths accosted my brother and attacked him with swords. While defending himself, his thumb was severed. He was initially taken to a hospital in Palanpur but we were told he would require plastic surgery. So, we brought him to Ahmedabad Sunday night. He has undergone the surgery and is expected to be hospitalised for the next five to six days,” Dhirajkumar told The Indian Express.
Congress MLA Jignesh Mevani, visited the victim in Ahmedabad Monday evening and demanded for the immediate arrest of all the accused in the case, failing which, he said, a call shall be given for “Patan Bandh”.
