Key domestic index BSE's Sensex on Tuesday hit a fresh peak of 63,588.31, after rising 260 points. The index today surpassed its previous peak of 63,583 which it touched on December 1, 2022. However, Sensex settled 195.45 points, or 0.31 per cent at 63,523.15. Broader NSE Nifty50 gained 40.15 points, or 0.21 per cent to close at 18,856.85. In the intraday session, it touched a peak of 18,875.90, which was only 12 points less than the record high of 18,887.6. Broader markets extended gains today, as Nifty Midcap 100 gained 0.82 per cent, Nifty Midcap 50 spurt 0.79 per cent, and Nifty Midcap 150 rose 0.75 per cent. Sectorally, Nifty Financial Services 25/50 climbed 1.02 per cent, the media index jumped 0.47 per cent, and the IT index settled 0.33 per cent higher. HDFC and HDFC Bank were among the top gainers in today's session after HDFC got the Competition Commission of India's nod to hold up to 50 per cent stake in HDFC Life. Zee Enterprises jumped 7.85 per cent in morning trade to hit Rs 186.95 after SAT agreed to hear the company's plea over the Sebi order on June 26. However, after Sony Pictures said it is monitoring the Sebi's order against Zee, the media company's stock plunged, and settled 4 per cent higher at Rs 179.95 on NSE. PowerGrid, ONGC, Adani Ports, HDFC, HDFC Life, Tech Mahindra, Wipro, Hero MotoCorp, TCS, Bharti Airtel, Grasim and Coal India were the top performing stocks in today's session. On the other hand, JSW Steel, Divis Lab, Hindalco, M&M, ITC, IndusInd Bank, Axis Bank, Apollo Hospital and Bajaj Finance were the top losing stocks in today's session.
