IT sector drags equities as Sensex tanks 519 pts, Nifty settles at 17,702; PSB stocks jump

Domestic equities pared off its early losses on Monday led by gains in PSB stocks but still settled lower amid weak performance by IT stocks, and weak global sentiments. BSE benchmark Sensex slumped 519.31 points, or 0.86 per cent, to 59,911.69, while NSE’s Nifty tanked 125.65 points, or 0.70 per cent to 17,702.35.

In the intraday session today, the 50-share Sensex touched a low of 59,442.47, while Nifty touched 17,574.05.

IT major Infosys tanked 9.26 per cent today, to settle at Rs 1,260 on BSE. The stock was its peers’ performance was down today after Infosys’ March quarter’s results spooked investors. The firm on Thursdays said its consolidated net profit in Q4 roe 7.8 per cent year-on-year rise to Rs 6,128 crore.

IT stocks were the top laggards at open as the Nifty IT index settled 4.71 per cent down. Tech Mahindra tanked 5.23 per cent, followed by HCLTech at 2.82 per cent, Wipro at 1.66 per cent, and TCS at 1.56 per cent. Meanwhile, Nifty 100 tanked 0.52 per cent today, followed by Nifty 200 at 0.40 per cent and Nifty 500 at 0.40 per cent.

PSU Bank index soared 3.13 per cent, as SBI jumped over 2 per cent. Realty stocks gained 0.99 per cent, followed by oil and gas stocks at 0.95 per cent.
