Industry seeks more time for BIS labelling

The BIS, on March 25, issued a notification demanding the IT and electronic manufacturers to change the font size of the brand name and engrave, emboss or screen print the BIS-approved label on both products and packages they sell.

UP in arms against the new Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) labelling requirement for the electronics and IT industry effective Friday, the Manufacturers Association for Information Technology (MAIT) has approached the IT and consumer affairs ministries seeking an extension of the deadline and demanding a feasibility study for such requirements. The industry has argued that failure to do so will impact the global supply chain and escalate the cost of products by almost 100 per cent in some cases.

The BIS, on March 25, issued a notification demanding the IT and electronic manufacturers to change the font size of the brand name and engrave, emboss or screen print the BIS-approved label on both products and packages they sell. The rule was to come in effect April 4 onwards.
