Studying in the UK provides students with opportunities that spark brighter futures anywhere across the globe. With renowned universities, a vibrant culture, and a diverse community, it’s a top choice for higher education. Despite the high exchange rate, Indian students find immense value in the UK, offering career prospects, learning experiences, and cultural exposure.

Scholarships alleviate the financial burden, with the government and universities providing substantial grants for tuition, living expenses, and more. These scholarships, worth millions of pounds, are accessible across UK institutions. Indian students can explore various options from the UK government, British Council, and universities, totalling over £13 million annually. From these, the GREAT Scholarships programme stands one of the most popular amongst Indian students, enabling them to realise their true potential and following their journey towards building a successful career.

Facilitating Access to Postgraduate Education

The GREAT Scholarships programme 2024-25 offers Indian students a unique opportunity to pursue postgraduate courses in the UK across a diverse range of subjects. In addition to the broad spectrum of scholarships available, the GREAT Scholarships programme also caters to specific areas of interest. Partnering with the Ministry for Justice, the programme offers two scholarships dedicated to Justice and Law studies. These scholarships provide Indian students with the opportunity to explore disciplines such as human rights, property law, criminal justice, and commercial law, nurturing future leaders in the legal field.

Moreover, for students with a passion for science and technology, the programme allocates four scholarships across four UK universities. Covering a wide array of subjects including artificial intelligence, sustainable engineering, and psychology, these scholarships pave the way for Indian students to delve into cutting-edge research and innovation in their chosen fields.

Fostering Bilateral Relations

At its core, the GREAT Scholarships programme serves as more than just a financial aid initiative; it embodies a commitment to fostering stronger ties between the UK and India. With a significant number of Indian students choosing to study in the UK each year, the programme aims to celebrate the diversity of institutions in the UK and build upon the longstanding relationship between the two nations.

Becoming a GREAT Scholar

What sets a GREAT scholar apart extends beyond academic excellence; it encompasses a spirit of engagement and a commitment to fostering bilateral relations. GREAT scholars are expected to be citizens of India with undergraduate degrees, demonstrating motivation and a genuine interest in their proposed field of study. Proficiency in English and a willingness to engage with the UK academic community are also prerequisites for applicants.

Furthermore, as ambassadors of the programme, GREAT scholars are encouraged to share their experiences and insights through the British Council and their respective higher education institutions, to inspire those looking at educational possibilities and career paths in the UK. By actively participating in networking events, GREAT scholars play a vital role in nurturing a global community of scholars.

Arjun, from a small village Dhana Teja, dreamt of studying in the UK. After some preparation and support from a friend, he earned a GREAT scholarship for a master’s in Advanced Water Management at Cranfield University. He says, “‘I chose to apply to UK universities after considering the quality and duration of the courses, along with the language of the country. I am very thankful for the GREAT scholarship, without which I would have been not able to afford higher education costs. Moreover, the scholarship helped me gain confidence and motivated me to give back to society. Young children from my village have started to believe that they too can attend the UK for higher studies. I am ecstatic that my selection created a sense of belief for them.”

As the autumn 2024 intake approaches, Indian students stand poised to embark on a journey of academic discovery and personal growth. Through the GREAT Scholarships programme, they are empowered to pursue their educational aspirations in the UK, unlocking doors to new opportunities and experiences. As they step onto campuses across the UK, they carry with them the promise of a brighter future, enriched by the transformative power of education enabled by the GREAT Scholarships initiative.
