Arab states to deliver verdict on Qatar as compromise seems far-off

The Arab countries have demanded Qatar curtail its support for the Muslim Brotherhood, shut down the pan-Arab al Jazeera TV channel, close down a Turkish base and downgrade its ties with regional arch-rival Iran.

Qatar did not give reason for the withdrawal but the move comes as it faces a major diplomatic crisis with some of its Gulf Arab neighbours. They cut ties a week ago, accusing Doha of backing Islamist militancy and Iran. Qatar strongly denies this.

Qatar Airways on Monday called on the UN's aviation body, the International Civil Aviation Organization, to declare the Gulf boycott illegal and a violation of a 1944 convention on international air transport. Qatar Airways CEO Akbar Al Baker said this was an "illegal blockade".

Qatar's port authority said its cargo will go through Sohar, as well as Oman's port at Salalah, bypassing the need to dock in any of those countries that have cut ties. Global shipper Maersk already has said it will begin using Salalah for its shipments to Qatar.

Post the isolation of Qatar, dozens of daily flights by Qatar Airways and carriers from those countries which banned Qatar have been canceled. Qatari aircraft are now forced to make long diversions, mainly around Bahrain and the vast airspace of Saudi Arabia.

Bahrain, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the UAE have cut diplomatic ties on Monday and are trying to blockade Qatar by air and sea. Lavrov said that Russia is "ready to try to do everything in its power" to help resolve the crisis and said unity is needed to fight terrorism.
