Olaf Scholz BIOGRAPHY

Olaf Scholz, born June 14, 1958, is Germany's current Chancellor, a post he assumed in December 2021. A member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), his political career spans decades. He served as Hamburg's First Mayor (2011-2018), Federal Minister of Finance (2018-2021), and held other key ministerial roles. Scholz's early career involved law, specializing in labour and employment. He rose through SPD ranks, serving as General Secretary and later deputy party leader. His chancellorship has been marked by Germany's response to the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. While initially cautious, Scholz oversaw increased defence spending, weapons supplies to Ukraine, and the halting of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. His Zeitenwende speech (September 2022) outlined a new defence policy. He also led Germany's response to the Israel-Hamas war, providing significant aid to Israel. However, his tenure has faced challenges, including budget constraints leading to protests and ultimately a collapse of his coalition government in November 2024, triggered by the dismissal of the Finance Minister. A subsequent vote of no confidence led to the dissolution of the Bundestag and snap elections scheduled for February 2025. Scholz's legacy will be defined by his handling of international crises and domestic political instability.
