Dharashiv, previously called Osmanabad, is also in the rain shadow part of Maharashtra, with a drought recorded every three years. This has resulted in the entire farming community being dependent on groundwater.

The scheme is meant to tackle the drought in Marathwada region. As per the cabinet discussion, there are three lift diversion schemes which include Damanganga - Vaitarana - Godavari, Damanganga - Ekdare - Godavari and Par - Godavari.

Aurangabad district has seen a fall in average depth of ground water level in the month of January, from the five-year average of 8.52 metres to 9.46 metres, a dip of 0.94 metres.
