We are back for South Africa's first innings! The umpires are back out in the middle and the Pakistan fielders have taken their places on the field as well. It will be the duo of Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton to open the innings for South Africa. Shaheen Afridi has the new ball in hand and is raring to go. Let's play...

Right then, South Africa have managed to bowl out Pakistan whilst the pitch is still conducive for batting but we did see Keshav Maharaj get some purchase off late and that will certainly give the Pakistani spinners a lot of confidence. The onus will be on the Proteas openers to make sur they remain unscathed headng into the Lunch interval. Let's see how this session pans out...

South Africa started Day 2 with some probing questions being asked by Keshav Maharaj and Kagiso Rabada but neither could get a breakthrough and this allowed Salman Agha to throw caution to the wind and pick up some quick runs. Saud Shakeel brought up a steady half century and the duo seemed to be taking the hosts to a score beyond 350 runs. However, Keshav Maharaj did get a breakthrough and from thereon, it was a procession as the left-arm spinner took 7 wickets and made short-work of the Pakistani tail.

A superb hour or so of play from South Africa and thanks to Keshav Maharaj's exploits, they have managed to bowl Pakistan out inside the first session on Day 2. 333 isn't a bad score by any means and Pakistan will certainly take it. However, they will feel this could have been a lot more given the way Saud Shakeel and Salman Agha were playing at one point. A good battle between bat and ball in this session and neither side will be too disappointed.

Keshav Maharaj to Asif Afridi, OUT! BOWLED'EM! Keshav Maharaj finishes off with a seven-wicket haul! He delivers it a bit loopy, slower through the air, pitching it outside off and turns it in. Asif Afridi goes for a wild heave across the line but the ball finds the gap between the bat and pad and thumps the stumps. Pakistan are bowled out for 333 on the board!

Drinks Break! Saud Shakeel and Salman Agha were genuinely thriving at the crease, but Keshav Maharaj stood up once again to delivery a wicket and broke the crucial partnership. The track hasn't changed much from yesterday as the batters aren't finding difficulties rotating the strike and cash out boundaries every now and then, but now the Proteas' need to capitalize on the wicket and keep the pressure on the opposition batters. Noman Ali is the new batter on the crease.

Keshav Maharaj to Salman Agha, OUT! LBW! That was a long time coming and finally, Keshav Maharaj gets his due. Maharaj pushes this one through a bit quicker, fuller and straighter. Salman Agha lunges and looks to block it down the line but the ball just drifts in a touch and goes past the inside edge to crash into the pads. After a loud appeal, the finger is raised but Salman does review it. Nothing on UltraEdge and Ball Tracking shows that the ball would have hit the leg stump. The on-field decision stands and Salman walks back after a momentum-injecting knock of 45 from 76 balls.

We are all set for the action to begin on Day 2. The umpires have stepped the ground. Abdullah Shafique is up for a chat as well. He says that wining the toss was crucial for them. After that their only job it to build on the partnership and score big runs on the board. Adds that it's not easy to face the new fresh bowlers with the new ball, but he have worked a lot to gain more and more confidence. Ends up saying that the batters job is to stay put on the crease and circulate the strike as much as they can to defend that total.

South African spinner, Keshav Maharaj  says that he is excited to be back in the team and have a long spell after a while. Reckons that he expected the ball not to turn much on Day 1, similar to conditions in Durban and it was an opportunity for some old fashioned Test cricket. Mentions that the dropped chances on Day 1 were disappointing and they pride themselves on their fielding and hopefully, they can amend that.

PITCH REPORT - Aamer Sohail is near the deck with his insights. He starts of saying that the pitch has surprised many as it was said that it will be profitable to the spinners but i didn't happen on Day 1. Continues that the track has covered a bit of green grass which will offer the pacers some credibility. Ends up saying that as the game will progress the pitch will open up, but it's still decent for the batters.

There is a big piece of news coming in from the Pakistan camp as Mohammad Rizwan has been dropped as the ODI captain and it will be Shaheen Afridi to lead the side in the format going forward.

South Africa, meanwhile, will head into Day 2 with work to do. The return of Keshav Maharaj gives them a crucial spin option as they seek to counter Pakistan’s spin-friendly mode. On Day 1 the bowling showed glimpses as, Maharaj grabbed 2/63, and Simon Harmer took 2/75, yet they conceded too many chances in the field. Their plan today will centre on early wickets, tighter fielding, and using Maharaj’s craft plus seamers like Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen to keep Pakistan’s batting under control before the pitch reality turns deeper. For Pakistan, yesterday was a positive start, after electing to bat first, they ended Day 1 at 259 for 5, guided by skipper Shan Masood’s 87 who was the star player in the previous Day. Saud Shakeel and Salman Agha will continue their partnership on Day 2. The home side managed to exploit some lax fielding by South Africa, but the seven years old second new ball's spin and seam might threatened. Pakistan will likely look to deepen their innings, push beyond 350, and use their spinners in tandem with seamers to create pressure early in South Africa’s reply.

...DAY 2, SESSION 1...

Despite the surface being bereft of grass and dry in nature, there has not been much turn so far. Expect it to start offering more, perhaps in the second half of Day 2 or from Day 3 onwards. It is all set up for an intriguing Day 2 on Tuesday, 21st October. With the second new ball only seven overs old, Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabada will be raring to go in the morning after a good night’s rest. Moreover, given that the batters looked troubled in the two overs of spin with the new cherry, the spinners are also likely to have a role to play. Pakistan will be aiming for at least 350 from here, and with this being the last recognised partnership, Salman Agha and Saud Shakeel will need to shoulder the responsibility.

Rizwan, however, could not survive until the close, with Kagiso Rabada making an immediate impact with the second new ball. It was a testing seven-over period late in the day for Saud Shakeel and Salman Agha, but both managed to navigate the challenge unscathed and see the day out. Even when wickets were hard to come by, South Africa managed to keep the runs in check, particularly during sessions two and three. Surprisingly, out of the 91 overs bowled, Senuran Muthusamy delivered only four overs, despite having claimed 11 wickets in the first Test.

Abdullah Shafique rode his luck, having been dropped on 0, 15, and 41, and also surviving a near-miss when the ball grazed the off stump before he had even opened his account. Those drops proved costly for the visitors, with Shafique going on to stitch a 111-run stand for the second wicket with Shan Masood. Masood was also dropped on 71, but the Proteas managed to deny him a century. In a burst before the second new ball was due, Marco Jansen got the old ball to reverse, testing Mohammad Rizwan and Saud Shakeel, though they managed to see off the spell.

Earlier, after winning the toss, Pakistan opted to bat first, with Shan Masood unsure how the surface would behave. The track looked drier and more abrasive than Lahore, but its behaviour belied its appearance. Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen tested the two Pakistani openers early in the morning, beating the bat at times, though edges failed to carry. Simon Harmer produced a peach of a delivery to dismiss Imam-ul-Haq, but no other ball throughout the day turned as sharply as that one.

SESSION SUMMARY - 29 overs, 82 runs, and 2 wickets. An entertaining day of Test cricket comes to a close, and by the end, the honours are even. Pakistan threatened to take control with their strong start, but South Africa fought back in sessions two and three to keep the hosts in check and that too despite several chances going down.

Chances will be created, and if South Africa manage to convert one, they could finish the day on a high, especially with the new ball due in just two overs’ time. Aiden Markram has a decision to make whether to take the new ball straight away or stick with the old one for a while, given that the older ball has been reversing nicely. Babar Azam looked in good touch during his brief stay, though to be fair, he was offered a few loose deliveries early on. However, Keshav Maharaj managed to dismiss him. Senuran Muthusamy dropped the Pakistani skipper on 71, a chance that South Africa might well end up ruing later in the game. The surface has yet to show any real signs of a sharp or consistent turn. Yes, there was a hint of grip and turn, but it was gentle and manageable for the batters. The Proteas will be eager to see the back of Shan Masood, who has held firm at one end, as they look to chip away at the wickets. SESSION SUMMARY - 82 runs, 32 overs and 2 wickets. A better session for South Africa, but their woes in the field have continued. As the tourists began the session with pace from both ends, Shan Masood and Abdullah Shafique started cautiously. Even when the spinners were introduced, Masood, who had taken the aerial route in the first session, chose to dial it down in the afternoon. Both batters brought up their fifties, with Shafique enjoying plenty of fortune along the way. Having already been dropped twice in the morning, he was put down again on 41, and a stumping chance went begging soon after he reached his half-century, before he was eventually dismissed.

Pakistan were 107/1 at lunch in Lahore on Day 1, and the second-wicket stand ended up being worth 161 runs. They will be hoping for a similarly dominant, if not better, partnership here in Rawalpindi. The second session is set to commence at 7.40 am GMT, but in the meantime, you can switch tabs and follow the action from the second T20I between New Zealand and England in Christchurch, where the tourists have gotten off to a strong start. Apart from the delivery that spun sharply to dismiss Imam, there haven’t been any demons in the surface despite all the pre-match talk about it being drier and more abrasive than the one in Lahore. With the ball getting softer, if conditions ease out, it could be a long day in the field for South Africa. However, Marco Jansen found a bit of reverse swing before lunch, which will be something to watch out for in the second session.

Simon Harmer produced a ripper to see the back of Imam, but that was as good as it got for the visitors in that session. Shan Masood looked shaky early on against the spinners but soon decided to use his feet to force the spinners off their lengths. That adjustment paid off for the Pakistani skipper. Shafique did ride his luck, having been dropped on 0 and 15, and surviving a close call when the ball grazed the off stump without dislodging the bails on nought. However, he was able to put those moments behind him and grew in confidence as the innings progressed.

A solid session for Pakistan. Having won the toss, they needed to get off to a strong start, and they have done just that. South Africa, on the other hand, will have expected more than a single wicket. Had the chances offered been taken, the visitors might have had a different story to tell. Pakistan got off to a steady start as the opening pair of Abdullah Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq nearly navigated the first hour unscathed. Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen asked plenty of questions, beating both openers on either edge, but Shafique and Imam managed to capitalise whenever the seamers strayed in line or length.

South Africa's Tony de Zorzi is also up for a chat. He says that there was some reverse swing in Lahore but the pitch conditions are pretty much the same when they faced Bangladesh earlier. Continues that he had a bit of difficulty facing the spinners, but he is looking forward to the challenge. Ends up saying that they don't mind batting second, but they need to take wickets to put their opposition under pressure.

Pakistan's Shaheen Afridi is in for a chat. Mentions that he bowled only 5 overs in the first innings, but the team needed an effort from him in the 2nd innings, and he is happy to have delivered. Feels that when there is not much help from the surface for seamers, it is important that you target the stumps. Believes that the more you bowl, the more you will improve.

PITCH REPORT - Ramiz Raja is pitchside. He reckons that this is another difficult wicket for the batters. Bazid Khan joins him, and he expects the ball to start turning quite early in the game. Mentions that the track is drier and more abrasive than it was in Lahore. Believes that the batters will have to have a couple of shots in their armour to be able to rotate the strike and put pressure on the bowlers. Adds that the sweep could be effective against spinners. Bazid opines Pakistan will be ahead in the game if they post a score above 275 and feels that chasing anything above 150 in the fourth innings will be really difficult.

Mentions that he is blessed to have world-class spinners in their ranks. Informs that they have two changes with Keshav Maharaj and Marco Jansen coming into the side and Wiaan Mulder and Prenelan Subrayen are the ones missing out.

Shan Masood, the skipper of Pakistan, says that he is not sure how the pitch is going to behave, so they will opt to bat first and play it safe. Continue that they just have to build on partnerships and make sure they score big. Adds that they will they will have to take one day at a time and win session by session. The reigning Test champions, South Africa, began their title defence with a defeat and will be eager to bounce back. In the first Test, they struggled to cope with Pakistan’s spin attack, Noman Ali and Sajid Khan, who made the most of the spin-friendly surface. Their batting showed promise, with a fine century from Tony de Zorzi and a composed 71 from Ryan Rickelton in the first innings. With spinner Keshav Maharaj reportedly set to return for the second Test, South Africa will be hoping their own spin attack can rise to the challenge and make a stronger impact this time.

Pakistan enter the second Test riding high on momentum. In Lahore, they piled up 378 in the first innings, anchored by knocks from Imam-ul-Haq and Salman Agha. Their bowlers then restricted South Africa to 269, and despite a brief stumble in the second innings, Pakistan sealed a convincing 93-run victory. Veteran spinner Noman Ali was the standout performer with a ten-wicket haul, ably supported by the rest of the attack.
