So all eyes will be on Corbin Bosch. Remember, he was initially scheduled to play for Peshawar Zalmi in the Pakistan Super League, but after being picked in the IPL auctions, chose his loyalty towards Mumbai. PSL has banned him for one year as he withdrew after committing to the franchise, but as far as Corbin is concerned, it is a thing of the past. Bosch is a fast bowler, with decent batting skills, as was shown in Centurion in a Test match against Pakistan in 2024. Understandably, Bumrah will be resting in the first innings and will be expected to come in as the impact player in the second innings. As far as Lucknow are concerned, they are going in with 3 overseas players, opening the door to use David Miller in the second innings as an impact player. As per the rules of the IPL, you can use an overseas player as an impact player ONLY IF the starting XI has less than 4 overseas players.

The skipper of Mumbai Indians, HARDIK PANDYA, says he was also planning to bowl first but looking at the heat, does not mind batting first either. On the adjustment needed to play a day game, Hardik says that it is just the mindset and reminding oneself that as children, they used to play in this heat. So, his advice is to not think about the heat else it could mentally tire you down. On the ESA day, Pandya states that the ESA game has always been very special, applauding the initiative by Ms. Nita Ambani, saying that it is a dream come true for so many children and at the same time, a great motivation for the players. On being informed that as per the global analysts, whenever MI have won 5 matches on the trot, they have gone on to win the IPL, HP says that he doesn't think too much about these things but does remember this happening in 2015 when he won his first IPL trophy. But adds that rather than focussing on these things, he would rather focus on sticking to the processes, albeit admitting that momentum is always handy. On the team changes, Hardik Pandya informs that Karn Sharma comes back, and also states that Mitchell Santner misses out as he has sustained a niggle in his finger, enabling Corbin Bosch to make his debut.

The captain of Lucknow Super Giants, RISHABH PANT, says that the wicket might start slow under the heat and get better later on, which is why he wants to bowl first. Mentions that he is just trying to stay in a positive mindset and talking to everybody around, not trying to think a lot about the game. On LSG's excellent head-to-head record against MI, having won 6 out of the previous 7 encounters, Pant states that the stats are there only to give comfort and knowledge but they will have to play well on the given day. Could we possibly see a contest between the current and future seam leaders of India? In IPL 2024, a new star was born, by the name of Mayank Yadav. He clocked speeds in excess of 150 kph and there were talks of Mayank bowling alongside Jasprit Bumrah in the 2024 T20 World Cup. But LSG's coach Justin Langer had warned against managing Mayank's workload and as a result, he has spent most of his time post IPL 2024 on the sidelines, due to injury. He was last seen representing India against Bangladesh in a T20I in Hyderabad, way back in October 2024. There have been murmurs from the LSG camp that today they could unleash Mayank to facilitate a showdown between him and Boom Boom. Which cricket fan wouldn't want that? Do stay tuned for the toss, for more clarity on the teams.

PITCH REPORT - Ian Bishop is joined by Eoin Morgan for the pitch analysis. Bishop starts by saying it is very hot, and this is a special day with more than 19000 school kids here to watch the game. Mentions that the centre pitch is being used with equidistant square boundaries of 63 metres, while the straight hit is 73 metres. Adds that historically, in the day games, teams batting first have won 4 games and chasing teams have won 4 games too. Eoin Morgan joins in and says there is an even covering of grass, but underneath it is very dry, which will hold up initially, and as the game goes on, the track could slow down but, despite that, teams might want to chase.

Coming to the match then. Mumbai Indians vs Lucknow Super Giants. Let's rewind to around three weeks back. Mumbai were hurting, players were out of form and an on-song Lucknow managed to pip them at the latter's home ground. But 3 weeks later, it is a different story. The team which was hurting then is on a roll now, having registered 4 wins on the trot and looking more and more poised to not just qualify for the playoffs, but probably make it to the top 2 as well. The Super Giants had problems right from the start of the season, but due to one or two strong performances, those weaknesses were being masked. But over the course of time, especially quoting the law of averages, the dip in form of star players has kind of exposed those problems. With 2 losses in their last 3 games, LSG seem to be a side unsure of its proper combination but they will hope that this time, the law of averages works in their favour.

With more than half the season done, the playoff race has intensified, and two teams which are right in this race are up against each other in match number 45. It’s the Mumbai Indians taking on the Lucknow Super Giants at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Both teams have played 9 games and won 5, and both teams would be looking to consolidate their position in the points table with a sixth win under their belt. Mumbai Indians have suddenly risen from the dead, as has been the story for them over the years, as they have now won 4 games on the trot after having just one win in the first five games. For them, the return of Jasprit Bumrah has been a big boost, as he has consistently bowled economical spells operating in tough phases of the game. Trent Boult's return to form has further bolstered their bowling attack, as the veteran left-arm quick picked up a match-winning four-fer in the last game. The rest of their bowlers have pretty much played the supporting role, chipping in with wickets here and there. In their batting, Rohit Sharma has found his touch, as he has now notched up two fifties in a row. Suryakumar Yadav has been consistently among the runs, right from the start. Tilak Varma's willow is now finding the middle too, as after the poor outing against LSG in the first encounter, he has now notched up two fifties. Hardik Pandya, their captain, has been the team’s MVP in a way, as he has consistently delivered with both bat and ball. On the other hand, Lucknow Super Giants are coming into the game on the back of a poor loss against DC, where they were pretty much outplayed in all departments. Arguably their number one batter, Nicholas Pooran, has now faced three failures in a row, which would concern the LSG management a bit. Rishabh Pant has consistently failed to make a mark, as he doesn’t seem to be in any touch whatsoever. Their openers, though, have continued to contribute, as the duo of Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh are arguably enjoying one of their best seasons. The former in particular has been a real value add to the team, as he has now started to contribute with the ball too. Ayush Badoni and Abdul Samad have been consistently playing cameos in the latter half of the innings. Especially the former, whose form is certainly a big positive for the team. David Miller, though, similar to Rishabh Pant, has failed to make a mark. In their bowling, Avesh Khan, Digvesh Singh, and Shardul Thakur have been mighty impressive as they have taken the bulk of the responsibility. Avesh Khan, in particular, is back to his very best, as he delivered a thrilling win for LSG over RR, defending just 9 runs off the last over. Shardul Thakur and Digvesh Singh have been consistently amongst the wickets for LSG, as they both have taken 12 and 9 wickets each, respectively. The form of Ravi Bishnoi would be concerning the management. And one can fairly argue about whether the captain has used him well. Mayank Yadav has joined the LSG camp, and it would be interesting to see when he makes it to the eleven. So, coming to this afternoon fixture, it promises to be another high-scoring affair at the Wankhede. Both teams have good firepower in their batting, and we should be ready for the Sunday afternoon fireworks. So, will the Mumbai Indians continue their merry run and go five in five, or will the Rishabh Pant-led LSG unit get back to winning ways? We shall find out.
