India have a massive lead of 190 runs but they will be a tad disappointed to have added just 15 runs on Day 3. Both Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel were a bit passive against the likes of Mark Wood and Joe Root and the runs only flowed in the one over that Jack Leach bowled. Jadeja kept on just blocking and missed one that got him out LBW and then it was all over within a span of five minutes. However, that stand between Jadeja and Axar has given India a good chance of bundling out the opposition and they have a real shot of an innings victory here. A big innings in the context of the match is coming up and all eyes will be on the English openers. Join us in a few minutes as England's second innings is up next.
Right then, a quick turnaround for England in the first hour or so on Day 3 and they will be fairly relieved to have not conceded many runs either. Joe Root has been their best bowler and got a couple of quick wickets to give his side the much-needed breather and ended with 4 wickets overall. Rehan Ahmed then came in and got the final wicket to keep India's lead under the 200-run mark. Overall, it was a sedate display with the ball but they have done well here to give themselves half a chance of making a comeback in the game.

... DAY 3, FIRST SESSION ...
England haven't been able to make inroads with the ball and a lot will depend on their top order when they eventually do come out to bat but it is going to be a really difficult ask for them. Stay tuned as the start of Day 3 isn't far away.
India have a huge first innings lead and aren't quite done yet with the bat and with the spin attack they have, they will be looking to make the second English innings the last one of the game.

The hosts have enjoyed an amazing couple of days and are well ahead in the game. England will need to conjure up a special performance with the bat to salvage something here.

Right then, India already lead by 175 runs which is massive and with still some gas left in the tank, it could get really amazing for them. As for England, they have been dealt a big blow in the very first innings of the very first Test match on this long red-ball tour and will have to pull off an amazing heist to take the game into a fourth innings. Day 3 is generally the moving day and we are well poised to see plenty of action one way or another. Day 3 will begin on Saturday at 9.30 am IST (4 am GMT) but you can join us a lot sooner for the build-up. Cheers!
KL Rahul is down for a quick chat and says that the hundred in South Africa has given him a lot of confidence. He was just looking to enjoy his batting and is happy with where the team stands. He also adds that the wickets are very different from that in South Africa but that is the challenge, he has to adapt to the conditions and play accordingly. He finally talks about his mindset of being a middle-order batter and says that it helps him prepare better as to the plans of the bowler. Ends by saying that they are looking to bat as long as possible as there are still 3 days to come in this Test match.
England have been made to toil long and hard in the field and at the end of it all, they look to be heading toward a heavy defeat with the style of batting they have adapted to, there is still that glimmer of hope but it is quite slim. The bowling from all bowlers was erratic but Jack Leach did provide a bit of control whenever he bowled and Joe Root looked the most likely to pick up a wicket. Root, who will have to play a big role in the next innings with the bat had to do a fair bit with the ball and in the field as well which will surely take its toll on him. The two young spinners in the form of Rehan Ahmed and Tom Hartley just haven't been able to match their counterparts and have received a lot of stick throughout the day. England need to be on it early on Day 3 if they are to make any impact in the second innings.
SESSION SUMMARY - 34 overs, 112 runs and 2 wickets. End of a pretty engrossing day of Test cricket that has seen India take complete control of the game and with the lead being stretched to 175 runs, they will have an eye on the 200-run mark and with two batters who have both spent time on the crease, it looks like a mere formality. In all three sessions, India lost a couple of wickets but managed to build partnerships right throughout, never allowing the opposition to make a comeback in the game. Ravindra Jadeja has played a fabulous unbeaten knock of 81 runs after a couple of 80s from Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul and has been well-supported by the likes of KS Bharat who scored 41 before getting out and now Axar Patel who is unbeaten on 35.

England might have been frustrated last evening with the runs flowing but they will be even more frustrated this morning. Joe Root finally got the ball and in the very first over of the Day, got rid of the dangerman Yashasvi Jaiswal. After that though, Ben Stokes employed the same tactics from Day 1 by bowling Tom Hartley for a long spell and that didn't work out. They created a bit of early pressure but bowled way too many bad balls and Root wasn't used much after his first spell of four overs. Mark Wood bowled a fiery spell in the middle but the short deliveries were put away by KL Rahul and then finally Tom Hartley got one wicket. At the moment though, England are staring at a big first-innings deficit and will have to turn things around very quickly if they are to stay in the game. SESSION SUMMARY - 27 overs, 103 runs and 2 wickets. The first session of Day 2 and it was once again dominated by India and even though they lost a couple of wickets, the runs kept on flowing and they are now just 24 runs away from England's first innings total with 7 wickets in hand. The man on song from last evening, Yashasvi Jaiswal perished in the very first over of the day after hitting a boundary but then KL Rahul walked in at number 4 for the first time in Tests and he didn't miss a beat from the very off. Rahul did nick one very early on but that was it and he scored freely against the spinners. Shubman Gill couldn't turn his shaky start from last evening into a positive one and held out mid-way through the session. Shreyas Iyer looked tentative at the start but hit his way out of trouble and now the set pair of Rahul and Iyer looks set to pile on the misery on the visitors.

As for India, the spinners did a fine job at various occasions but it was Jasprit Bumrah who broke through at a couple of vital times. Ravichandran Ashwin got two big wickets up top and one at the backend while Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel ran through the middle order. Jadeja did go for plenty later on but his three wickets were a good trade-off. A solid showing overall and India will feel they can easily go beyond this total given the inexperienced spin attack of the opposition. England though will come back out on the field and come hard at the Indian openers. Stick around as India's reply is up next and there are still 23 overs left on Day 1.
Wow, a fast and furious half an hour or so of the final session and India have managed to bundle England out for just 246 runs. England came in post-Tea being 215/8 but soon enough, the skipper Ben Stokes launched an all-out attack and brought up his Fifty and went beyond that as well. Mark Wood couldn't hang around for too long and was castled after which Stokes played a few more shots before being dismissed by a beauty from Bumrah. All in all, the English batters got start and partnerships brewed but they couldn't get that three-figure stand and have fallen short of the 250-run mark as well.

In the second half of the session, there were a lot of things going on as Jasprit Bumrah picked up a wicket in his second spell but then came a bit of counter-punch from England. It was the debutant Tom Hartley who took on the spinners and notched up crucial runs before Jadeja cleaned him up. Ben Stokes sensed the occasion and opened up his arms, putting the ball away for a few crucial boundaries. Jadeja got three wickets in the session but was a bit expensive towards the end of the session as well. England will be eyeing up the 250-run mark from here whereas India will look to pick up the remaining two wickets quickly after the interval. Session summary - 31 overs, 107 runs and 5 wickets. India dominant in the second session but Ben Stokes has kept his side in it. Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow took to the crease for the Lunch break and were well-set on the crease but soon after, Bairstow got out and Root soon followed suit as Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel made their mark with the ball. Stokes and Ben Foakes had to rebuild again for England and seemed to be doing a decent job until Foakes too fell prey to spin as well.

We are just a few minutes away from the start of this riveting contest but first the two sets of players lineup for their respective national anthems. It will be the national anthem of England first followed by the Indian national anthem.
India's skipper, Rohit Sharma says they would have batted first as well and it looks dry but they have good experience on what needs to be done on such a track whether they bat first or bowl first. Adds that the guys are excited for a five-match Test series and a lot of them haven't played in a long series like this. Mentions that it is about backing yourself and making the best of opportunities. Informs that they have gone with three spinners and two pacers with Kuldeep Yadav missing out and Axar Patel gets the nod as he has grabbed onto his opportunities well.
Ben Stokes, the captain of England wins the toss and decides to bat first. He says that the wicket is going to start turning and more the time is spent it's going to get tougher to bat, so they want to bat first and put some good runs on the board. He adds by saying that they have opted for the playing 11 that suits the conditions and the combination that will make them win the games. Finishes by saying that Mark Wood is the only fast bowler playing for them in the playing 11 and they will be looking to use him the best way they can.

PITCH REPORT - Murali Kartik is pitchside and he is joined by Kevin Pietersen. Pietersen says it will be a fascinating series and adds that the pitch looks very dry around the popping crease on one side. Adds that this track will turn but how much it is going to spin remains to be seen. Mentions that the middle part of the surface has some grass covering but it is dry underneath. The final part of the wicket is a bit less dry and the team winning the toss will bat first.
England on the other hand haven't played Test cricket since the Ashes last year and it has been six months to that final game. They return to India after a woeful ODI World Cup but they have been a different side in red ball cricket off late. They will play aggressive cricket and will look to take the Indian spinners on but to what extent they succeed in doing so, that we will have to wait and watch. One frustrating loss for Ben Stokes was that young spinner Shoaib Bashir was sent back to England due to unresolved visa issues but he did receive his Indian visa, not in time to play in the first Test though. England have already announced their Playing XI and have one debutant in the side. Which of the two stalwarts will make their mark early in the series and start off on the right foot? India come into this series on the back of a pretty decent series up against South Africa away from home where the bowlers shined but there were issues with the bat. With no Virat Kohli for the first two Tests, a lot will depend on the openers and Shubman Gill will have to step up his game at number 3. The middle order looks decent but the bowling attack does look very potent especially in these conditions and they have four quality spinners to choose from to go along with the likes of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj.
