Commentary
Jaiswal got off to an unusually slow start, but now that he has settled, he is showcasing his full range of shots and looks far more confident at the crease. For Sai Sudharsan, this innings carries significant importance. He has made a solid start and will be looking to convert it into a substantial score. West Indies used all their bowling options in the first session, and while the batters handled them with caution, the bowlers will not be too displeased with their efforts. They will, however, look to bring greater conviction into the second session, which begins at 12.10 pm IST (6.40 am GMT). Stay tuned.
The pitch has appeared on the slower side, typical of a black-soil surface, offering little bounce and causing the ball to stay low on a few occasions. With the slow nature of the track, spinners were eventually brought into the attack from both ends. KL Rahul’s dismissal, caught out through a stumping off Warrican, indicated that there was enough turn off the bare patches at one end, just as highlighted in the pitch report. There was sufficient grip and turn for the spinners, particularly when bowling with a slower pace and using flight. Warrican and Chase displayed excellent control and cleverly varied their speeds. Yet, it posed not much significant threat and the two left-handers, Sudharsan and Jaiswal, managed that testing period well, guiding their side safely through to Lunch.
After opting to bat first, the Indian openers found themselves tested early by Seales and Phillip. There was enough swing on offer, and it was Phillip who maintained tighter discipline, consistently drawing false strokes from the batters. Yet, amidst that probing spell, KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal managed to weather the storm. Rahul appeared composed and assured, while Jaiswal looked a bit flashy at times and survived a few anxious moments along the way. As the session wore on, the early movement began to fade, though there remained just enough deviation to keep the batters uncertain. Even so, the Indian openers negotiated the first testing hour with patience. Once they found themselves settled, boundaries came at a fair clip. The body weight transfer looked fine, and the footwork looked more assured as the two grew in confidence.
The first session has flown by in this second Test in New Delhi. It was a slow-burning morning, with occasional moments where the Windies challenged the batters, but overall, the session tilted in India’s favor with just a single wicket falling. The first hour was not particularly fluent, yielding only 29 runs, but the batters grew in confidence during the second hour, adding 65 runs even as the spinners bowled most of that phase and kept the pressure on.

Jomel Warrican to Sai Sudharsan, FOUR! Quite a way to start your innings! A low full toss, around off, Sai Sudharsan comes forward and uses his wrists to flick it in the gap to the left of mid-wicket for a boundary to get off the mark.
Sai Sudharsan walks in at number 3. A big, big innings for him at this position. Didn't quite prosper well in the England tour and is coming off the score of just 7 from the first Test. With a long conveyor belt of players waiting for their chance, this knock could be crucial for him to stake his claim and secure his spot in the side.

W
Jomel Warrican to KL Rahul, OUT! STUMPED! OUTFOXED! Windies manage to break through before Lunch, and it is a big wicket of KL Rahul, who departs after a good-looking 38 (54). Jomel uses his fingers to offer flight and pitches it up at just 80 kph, full and around off. Rahul uses his feet and looks to use his wrist to push it into the off side with soft hands for a single. But as the ball lands, it seems on a rough, and it spins away sharply across the batter, beating the outside edge of the bat. The keeper, Tevin Imlach, moves to his right, collects it low behind the wickets and swiftly dislodges the bails before Rahul could think of coming back. KL looks stunned at how the pitch has offered so much even in the first session itself, and he has to walk back. India are 58/1

Justin Greaves to KL Rahul, FOUR! Salt on the wounds! Justin again errs in his line and length - sprays it on the pads, on a fuller length. KL Rahul leans onto the delivery and flicks it to the right of diving mid-wicket for a boundary. 50 UP FOR INDIA!
Oh dear! That might have stung him hard on the head. A mandatory concussion test has been called for Khary Pierre, though he looks determined to carry on. The on-field umpires, however, have asked Pierre to go off the field for the concussion test according to the protocols. Kevlon Anderson rushes in as his substitute.
15.3
1
Justin Greaves to Yashasvi Jaiswal, OUCH! Khary Pierre takes a blow on his head. On a back of a length and outside off, Yashasvi Jaiswal goes back, uses the depth of the crease and thrashes it towards backward point on the bounce. The ball travels quickly, and Khary gets a bit less time to react. He leaps and tries to grab it with both his hands around his face with the fingers pointed towards the sky, but fails to close his hands. Hence, the ball bursts through and hits his cap and rolls behind him. Both batters take a single run. Also, there will be a mandatory concussion checkup for him.

Justin Greaves to Yashasvi Jaiswal, FOUR! CLASSIC! Greaves goes fuller in searching for swing but ends up bowling it too fuller, around off. Yashasvi Jaiswal prods forward and drives it on the up. Time for a drinks break, as the first hour is done in the morning of Day 1. KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal have given India a decent start and have managed to successfully navigate the challenging first hour without any loss. Though they've added just 29 runs, not losing any wickets is the crucial takeaway, with both showing strong defensive technique. Meanwhile, the West Indies seamers, Jayden Seales and Anderson Phillip, have bowled testing lines and repeatedly beaten the edges on multiple occasions, but have been unable to claim a single wicket. The pressure is growing on the bowlers, as the pitch is expected to ease and become more batting-friendly as the day progresses, suggesting a potentially long day ahead for the visitors. Anderson Phillip (5-2-9-0) to continue after the hydration break.

Anderson Phillip to KL Rahul, That's really close! It almost looked out in real-time but a smart review saves Rahul! This is on a fractionally fuller length, pitching around off and then nipping back in. KL Rahul gets half forward and plays for the initial line, looking to defend, but gets beaten on the inside edge and is rapped on the front pad. An appeal for LBW, but not given. Roston Chase and Anderson Phillip get in a conference with Hope and Imlach, also joining in, and eventually, after a chat, Chase goes for a review. The third umpire feels no need to check the UltraEdge as there is a clear gap between the pad and bat. Ball Tracking shows the impact and the wickets, both on the umpire's call. Hence, the on-field decision is upheld.

All is in readiness for the action to kick off in Delhi for the second and final Test. But before that, the Indian legend, Anil Kumble, rings the bell before the start of the play. Now, both umpires make their way out to the middle. Also, walk out the players of the Windies, led by their skipper, Roston Chase. They form a huddle, and Chase gives a pep talk before they disperse to take their respective positions. There stride out the two openers of India, where KL Rahul will open the innings alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal. The West Indies are starting with their spearhead, Jayden Seales. With three slips and a gully, Seales to Jaiswal. Here we go...
PITCH REPORT - Deep Dasgupta and Ian Bishop are pitchside with their observations. Deep describes it as a pleasant morning in Delhi and notes that the surface appears quite intriguing. Bishop joins in, immediately highlighting the presence of live grass that should help the pitch hold together through the course of the Test. However, he also points out certain bare areas that may rough up and bring the spinners into play as the game progresses, calling it a surface of contrasting halves. Adds that the pitch is unlikely to offer much bounce or carry. Deep remarks that although it appears somewhat patchy, it is likely to play better than it looks. Agreeing that it could behave inconsistently, he identifies the Pavilion End as an area where uneven bounce may come into effect and concludes by saying that the captain winning the toss might prefer to bat first.
The skipper of the West Indies, Roston Chase, says that they would’ve batted first as well, as the pitch looks a bit on the drier side. Expresses slight disappointment with the toss result but adds that the team is ready to make the most of the situation regardless of who bats first. Reflecting on their preparation, he mentions that the side has held some honest and deep discussions about their batting after the previous outings. The focus now, he says, is to bat the full 90 overs and approach the innings with patience and discipline. Chase emphasises that every batter needs to play each ball on its merit and build partnerships that can anchor the innings. Insists that consistency and smart shot selection will be the key against a quality attack. Speaking about the changes, he confirms that Tevin Imlach and Anderson Phillip come into the side. Adds that Anderson brings value with the new ball, while Imlach is a strong player of spin - something that could prove handy on this surface.
The captain of India, Shubman Gill, says that the wicket looks good and is hopeful that they will pile on big runs. Stresses that consistency is the key and playing with the same intensity is crucial in this format. Adds that not much has changed since he became the captain and that he is the same person, but with more responsibilities and he likes that. Says they are going unchanged.
West Indies (Playing XI) - John Campbell, Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Alick Athanaze, Roston Chase (C), Shai Hope, Tevin Imlach (WK) (In place of Brandon King), Justin Greaves, Khary Pierre, Jomel Warrican, Jayden Seales, and Anderson Phillip (In place of Johann Layne).
India (Unchanged Playing XI) - Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill (C), Dhruv Jurel (WK), Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Siraj.
TOSS - Both skippers, Shubman Gill and Roston Chase, have walked out in the middle for the important toss. Gill flips the coin, and Chase calls 'Heads'. It lands 'Tails'. India win the toss and Gill has elected to BAT first.
And now, the Delhi strip? What can we expect? Dry, dusty, and straight out of a spinner’s fantasy - expect turn and bounce. Key battles? Bumrah vs Hope could be fire early on, while Jadeja vs Athanaze has ‘mini-battle of technique’ written all over it. Oh, and don’t forget the Gill vs Chase captaincy chess match - one looking to stamp authority, the other to save pride. So buckle up - it’s India vs West Indies, Delhi edition. With all that to keep, strap in as the toss and team lineups are just around the corner!
As for India, the focus might not be just on winning the matches, while simultaneously, they would be looking to fine-tune their team combinations and skills before tougher challenges ahead. The WTC points are crucial, yes, but grooming the next-gen stars is the real deal. Will Gill’s leadership stay bold and attacking? Can Jurel continue his dream run after that classy century? And how about Bumrah and Siraj - will they even need a second spell if the spinners start their dance early? So many subplots, so little time!
Here’s what they’ll need - composure, commitment, and a little Caribbean flair. No more swinging wildly at everything that moves. Chase has to lead like the old Windies skippers - commanding and calculating. Their spinners, Warrican and Pierre, might finally get some help from the Delhi track. And maybe, just maybe, a big inning from anyone could bring back a spark of the good old days. Because, for real, the world misses a West Indies side that used to fight till the final ball.
Meanwhile, what about the visitors? West Indies considered this series as ‘Mission India', but let’s be honest - Ahmedabad was more Mission Impossible. They were bundled out twice inside 90 overs across both innings. Still, this isn’t a team short on heart. Alick Athanaze showed fight, Justin Greaves had moments, and Shai Hope has the class to turn it around. The question is - can they stitch it all together before Jadeja and Kuldeep spin them into knots again? If their batting can survive against spin in Delhi, who knows, maybe they’ll surprise us.
Let’s know a bit about India first, because, well, they’ve been ruthless. A win by an innings and 140 runs in Ahmedabad? That was dominance with a capital D. The top order clicked, the middle order sparkled, and the bowlers - Siraj, Bumrah, Jadeja, Kuldeep - looked like they were bowling with cheat codes. But hey, there’s still room to improve. Sai Sudharsan needs runs - desperately! Nitish Kumar Reddy needs game time, and KL Rahul - well, he needs no improvement, while he’d love to make back-to-back tons a thing again. With Delhi’s black-soiled surface expected to offer turn, India’s spinners might just have more fun than a cat in a laser-pointer maze.
India and West Indies - two giants of cricketing nostalgia, two teams with stories written in gold and grit! As the second and final Test begins at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, one question echoes across continents - can the Windies finally wake up from their long, long slumber? Or will India, the modern-day fortress, make this another quick finish to a one-sided saga? Either way, Delhi is ready for an exciting match ahead. On that note, hello and welcome to all of you!
... MATCH DAY ...
After a commanding win in the opener, India head into the second Test looking to seal the series emphatically, while West Indies are desperate to salvage pride and salvage something from this tour. In the first Test, India piled up 448/5 declared, powered by stellar hundreds from KL Rahul, Dhruv Jurel, and Ravindra Jadeja, and ripped through the Windies batting twice to win by an innings and 140 runs. Jadeja’s all-round brilliance (a century with the bat plus 4 for 54) underlined India’s dominance. Their strength lies in their batting depth, where the top and middle order have shown they can convert starts into big scores, and their bowling unit is well balanced - pace up front led by Jasprit Bumrah, supported by Mohammed Siraj, plus spin options in Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav to exploit second innings conditions. The concern might be over-rotation or fatigue, especially after such a big effort, but this is a chance to test bench strength. West Indies, meanwhile, will be hoping for better resistance. Their batting in the first Test was fragile - they were dismissed for 162 in the first innings and 146 in the second. Some resistance came from Alick Athanaze and Justin Greaves, but partnerships were scarce. They need the experience players like Brandon King, Roston Chase, and Shai Hope to step up, while the openers John Campbell and Tagenarine Chanderpaul needs to play with more freedom. Their bowling will need to be more incisive if they are to trouble India, especially with seamers like Jayden Seales and the spin of Khary Pierre and Roston Chase, but consistency and stamina will be critical. Historically, West Indies had the edge in this format but India haven't lost a Test match against the Windies in the last 23 years. Backed by momentum, home support, and the depth of form, the hosts will start as favourites, but West Indies will want to make them work hard, dig in, and potentially make this Test more competitive. It’s a battle of dominance meeting resistance, and the second Test promises its own drama under the Delhi sun.
