New Zealand will feel they are on top but England did not let the visitors run away with the game. The wicket is still a good one to bat on so they would want to cash in on it. The Kiwis will hope to take 2 or even more before the deficit is erased. A good little passage of play awaits before Tea. Can England enter the break unscathed?
The Kiwis will be a little disappointed with the lead! Their top order really batted well. Young, Conway and Taylor all scored half tons. All three of them were dismissed in the 80s and none could make it into a big one. However, because of them, 400-plus looked possible but the middle and the lower-order failed to make most of the starts they got and they end a little below that mark.
End of a really good bowling performance in this session! They had 5 wickets to take and they have taken it quickly. Stone, Broad, Anderson and Wood took one at least and in the end, they kept the lead under 100.
An appeal for an LBW has been turned down. England review.

If any, New Zealand would be ruing the last-ball wicket of Will Young on Friday evening, just about marring what was an excellent day's work. They have got plenty of batting left, in Henry Nicholls, Tom Blundell and Daryl Mitchell, but some inexperience as well. They have Ross Taylor batting well on 46, but everyday is a new day and England will know that if they get Taylor early, or go through his partners, they might well even get a lead, however slender it might be. The England bowlers did not bowl that badly, they caused a lot of problems, beat the edge a lot of times but they just did not have a lot of luck on their side. Broad though was the pick for them. He looked threatening in every spell he bowled and has two out of the three wickets to fall.
Another session which goes their way! They lost Conway early on but after that, Ross and Young battled through the difficult part and then managed to score freely. They added another good stand and got the deficit to below 80. Just as it seemed that both would resume their innings on Day 3, Young fell.
End of a really good day of Test cricket and on the end, it is New Zealand who will be the happier of the two. They would have been a lot more pleased had that wicket not fallen but the visitors will be pretty happy with where they are in the game at the moment.

England on the other hand, bowled well initially but the quality kept fading as the session went on. There were far too many loose balls and boundaries were also being scored frequently. They need to get a couple of wickets quickly or they will be chasing the game. Will there be a fight back? We will find out.
The session though started with England getting a chance to dismiss Young but that was not taken and since then, it was all about the two. They weathered the storm earlier on and then played brilliantly. As the innings progressed, they managed to score freely too. Conway has got to a half ton and Young is nearing his. The stand is above 100 and New Zealand will love another session like this one.
That is a superb session for the Kiwis! The two newbies to Test cricket, Young and Conway, have shown excellent technique and have really taken the visitors into a good position.

It actually has all been about Stuart Broad. No other bowler has got as much movement as Broad has and the Kiwis might just be smart enough to see him off and score against the other bowlers. New Zealand would be happy to have lost just Latham before Lunch. Playing Broad in this kind of form is menacing and Devon Conway has done really well to see off this period. He received a big slice of luck with a controversial catch but these things happen. Will Young has looked solid in his short stay so far.
End of an intriguing session. England came out all guns blazing, trying to get quick runs and got past 300. Then, with the ball, Stuart Broad generated excellent rhythm by striking in his third over. He would argue that he should have had two wickets but technology will not agree. Anderson was okay at the other end but not his usual self.

Now, Crawley claimed it, to have taken inches above the ground but Conway was going nowhere. At full speed, the umpires felt that the ball had bounced and even during the replays, the third umpire did not have concrete evidence to overturn the decision. Some might argue that Crawley had his fingers underneath the ball, but very difficult to say. From the front-on angle, the ball seemed to have bounced.
Is that taken? Did it carry? The umpires have a chat. The soft signal is NOT OUT. The third umpire has to have convincing evidence to overturn this decision and give Conway out. Seems to have bounced (to my naked eye). The third umpire agrees. I can potspone my visit to the doctor then...

Right then. Is 303 good enough? We shall know. The players are back on the field.
New Zealand would be disappointed. They had England on the ropes but allowed the home side to get away. Boult and Henry shared 7 wickets amongst themselves but Wagner was a disappointment. Ajaz Patel did well.
England actually started off well with the bat but then, had a collapse, as usual. Rory Burns tried hanging around, approaching another century but New Zealand kept chipping away on Thursday afternoon. It was then that the hosts found an unlikely hero in Dan Lawrence. His splendid unbeaten 81 definitely gave them control but one cannot ignore the contributions of Olly Stone and Mark Wood. Stone made 20 in a stand of 47 for the 7th wicket while Wood enjoyed himself, making 41 in a partnership of 66. His innings this morning gave England a massive lift.
Well, no century for Dan Lawrence but England have got a competitve score. It is a really good recovery from 175/6. 128 runs for the last 4 wickets, with Lawrence making 55 of those. So you can see the contribution of the other players. Fantastic from the lower order.

Full, outside off, nipping back in, James Anderson looked to drive but missed. He got hit on the pads and initial reaction was a inside edge. Umpire Richard Kettleborough shook his head and Boult demanded a review from his skipper. Latham looked at Rosco who did not seem to be too sure but the review was taken. All set then, are we? The Edgbaston crowd certainly is. It gives a rauceous welcome and ovation to the overnight heroes - Dan Lawrence and Mark Wood. This stand is worth 36 and the pair would want to try and double it, if possible. Right then, the players are ready. Here comes Trent Boult with the first ball of Day 2 to Lawrence...
What about the Black Caps then? The age-old issue for many teams - dismissing the tail quickly. Might just want to keep Lawrence off strike and focus on the likes of Wood, Broad and Jimmy. Boult and Wagner are masters in getting rid of the tail but do not count out the spin of Ajaz Patel. The pitch showed signs of some turn on Day 1 and Friday might just make the ball spin more.
Dan Lawrence has stood tall and this morning session could well decide how strong England are in this Test. Their minimum target would be 300 but if Lawrence can go on past his century and the tail can wag a touch, especially the likes of Stuart Broad, we could even have 350 on the board.
Happy or disappointed? This is the argument I was having with my colleague after Stumps last evening. England 258/7, well not happy at all after winning the toss and that too, having had a wicketless opening session. 72/0 became 85/3 and the advantage was thrown away. Earlier in the day, after being asked to field, the away sides' bowlers were quite discipline in the first session but with no success. They had an excellent second where they dismissed the top order of England. The third session also initially belonged to them but they could not press home the advantage. Except for Mitchell all the others had a wicket atleast. They will be pretty pleased with their effort of Day 1, except for the last hour or so.
After picking two wickets in quick succession at the start of this session, the Kiwis had reduced the hosts to 175 for 6. However, Lawrence along with Stone counter-attacked, the two added some handy runs before Stone fell. Wood now is playing another decent knock along with Lawrence who is playing a gem.
A strong fight back from Lawrence along with the lower-order has taken England into a decent position. Can’t actually say which side will be the happier of the two but the Kiwis will be disappointed as they let the advantage slip away at one stage.

Nothing ill can be said about the Kiwi bowling though. They bowled well, hit the right areas, kept things tight, swung the ball, moved it off the seam, but have not been able to enforce many mistakes or get the edge. The sun was out for a brief moment during the first session but it has mostly been overcast throughout. The openers have done all the hard work. It is time now to cash in. New Zealand, on the other hand, will aim for a good start after Lunch as a break generally disrupts concentration. Join us back at 1.40 pm local (1240 GMT).
Wonderful opening session for England. Something which they have longed to see consistently in the last few years - both openers walking back unscathed. Too many times they have been 20/3 or 30/2 but this has been a solid beginning. Dominic Sibley has looked a bit scratchy but in between, has played some wonderful shots as well. Rory Burns has looked compact and assuring.
