
Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi met the students of Hyderabad Central University and assured them his support, days after the suicide of Rohith Vemula, a Dalit scholar.

“This youngster who had come here to learn and improve the country was put into so much pain that he had no option but to commit suicide. The institution, instead of operating freely, used power to crush them. VC & Minister have not acted freely,” said Gandhi.

Rohith, whose body was found hanging in a hostel room, was among the five research scholars who were suspended by the university in August last year and also one of the accused in the case of assault on a student leader. He had complained several times to the management asking for the monthly stipend for his fellowship.
