Underprivileged children in state to have ‘Super 30’ date

His deep sense of social responsibility and love for underprivileged children has brought Anand Kumar to the city.

His deep sense of social responsibility and love for underprivileged children has brought Anand Kumar to the city. Kumar, founder of the much known ‘Super 30’ concept, was in the city on Saturday to include students from this part of the region among his ‘Super 30’. It is for the first time ever that Kumar has moved out of Patna to lend a helping hand to children from weak financial background.

Kumar,a Mathematics scholar, had established a school in 1997 named Ramanujan School of Mathematics, where he started giving coaching to those who aspired to reach the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). He could not attend the Cambridge University in UK despite getting an invitation due to financial constraints: an incident that motivated him to work for the underprivileged. Two other people,Amit and Praveen Kumar, joined hands with Anand in his endeavour.

“This part of the country is really rich and students can afford their studies, but I am here for those underprivileged who have the talent but no resources. The test for the students has already been conducted and I plan to provide coaching to five students from this region,” Kumar told Newsline. He also plans to include students from Uttar Pradesh for the first time.

About his mission,he said that it was his own life that motivated him to follow this path and train children who have something in them, but have none to show the path. Every year,Anand conducts a test that is on the pattern of IIT/JEE and then shortlists 30 children. Among those who have been taught by Anand, many made it to the IITs. In the first year of coaching alone,18 made it to the prestigious IITs.

“My biggest wealth is seeing those trained by me reach their dream destination. I have really worked hard, have eaten just one meal and sold papad to finance my studies. It was really a difficult phase of my life, but now that I am self content,I want to help others; and this is my biggest endeavour in life,” he added.

Besides providing free coaching,Anand has been providing free meals and accommodation to the children as well.

Kumar’s efforts have been acknowledged by both Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and recently by HRD Minister Kapil Sibal.
