The much-hyped atta-dal scheme was once again in the thick of controversy when Abdul Shaqir Mangat, one of the members of the grievances redressal committee, today said the ration being supplied to beneficiaries was of very poor quality. The maiden meeting of the committee, formed in 2007,was conducted on Friday. The Chief Minister is the chairman of the committee.

“Not only this, even the quantity is less. Hence it is lagging behind quantity as well as quality,” Mangat said.

The pulses being provided contain worms at times,he complained.

Following the complaint,DC Rahul Tewari immediately ordered an inquiry and asked officers of the Food and Civil Supplies department to get all ration depots in the district checked. With over 1,700 depots in the city, the checking exercise will take a lot of effort and time.

Apart from this, members said the public dealing offices of the sub-registrar did not even have the basic amenities like water and toilets. The problem exists even in the mini-secretariat and the judicial complexes.

As the sub-registrar offices in Transport Nagar and Sarabha Nagar are in the MC building, the DC said after talking to the MC commissioner, they will get toilets constructed in those buildings by April 20.

MC Councillor Sarabjit Singh Kaka stressed that the subway near Dholewal, which was closed due to some reasons, should be opened again. He had raised the demand a number of times earlier as well in the MC House but nothing was done till date.

Manjit Singh Khalsa, one of the members of the committee, said action should be taken against the violators for spreading fly ash at Focal Point. Till date,70 factories have been issued notice but no action has been taken. The members demanded that junkyard lying in stores of various departments should be cleared as soon as possible.

The DC also took serious note of the rank of officers who came at the meeting and directed that no officer less than the SP rank should be allowed. The Khanna SSP had sent an inspector-rank officer in the meeting. The DC also said instead of the joint commissioner, the additional or MC Commissioner should come for the meeting. Even the PPCB officer was not well-versed of the issues and hence the DC directed him to come prepared next time.
