Pak attack on Indian post does no help to normalise ties: Omar Abdullah

Political moves towards peace expected to be offset by attack.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today said the killing of five Indian soldiers along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch sector puts a question mark on Pakistan government’s overtures to India for improving ties.

“I was briefed early this morning about the news that five of our soldiers had been killed on the LoC. My heartfelt condolences to the next of the kin”,Abdullah said on micro-blogging site Twitter.

Pakistani troops attacked an Indian post along the Line of Control in the Poonch sector late last night, killing five Indian soldiers. Defence sources today said the Pakistani soldiers intruded into the Indian territory past midnight and ambushed the Sarla post on the Indian side of the LoC.

Peace between the two neighbouring states have been elusive and fragile since 1947 and the violence has escalated in recent times, both sides deploying attacks at various times through the past year, after a relative period of calm on the volatile northern border.

Abdullah also said that incidents of this kind will definitely not have a soothing effect on the rising hostility, and called into question the value of the overtures made by the new Pakistani government.

In an encounter in January,India had accused Pakistani soldiers of beheading two of its soldiers, while a Pakistani soldier and several militants have been gunned down by Indian soldiers on the Indian side of the LoC in the preceding months.
