Union Minister of State for Coal Sriprakash Jaiswal blamed the state government on Friday for the delay in setting up of two power units in Uttar Pradesh — one in Bilhaur to be built by NTPC and another in Ghatampur to be built by Nevyeli Lignite Corporation.

Speaking to mediapersons,Jaiswal said despite shortage of power across Uttar Pradesh, the state government was not giving permission for the acquisition of land for these two projects which will generate 2,100 MW. Both units are near Kanpur, the parliamentary constituency of Jaiswal.

“We thought that since the state is facing severe power crisis, they will take these projects seriously but even after over five months of sending the proposal for availing land, there is no response yet,” said Jaiswal. “We don’t want this land free of cost and are willing to pay as per the local circle rate.”

While the power unit in Bilhaur will generate about 900 MW,the one in Ghatampur will have 1,200 MW capacity.

“We will again request the Centre to take up the issue with the state government for the sake of people,” he added.

Regarding the performance of Coal India, the minister said it has been able to increase its production by 8 per cent despite facing lots of odds like Naxal menace in coal rich states.

Jaiswal said as taking environmental clearances for mining becomes difficult, the Coal ministry has sent a proposal to the government to give land on 10-year agreement for mining purpose.

“During that period, tree plantation will be undertaken in the land, which will be three to four times larger than the given land under mining,” said Jaiswal.

The minister said the money raised from the 10 per cent disinvestment in Coal India would be used for introducing schemes for the betterment of poor section of the society.
