Home turf returns Chandy for ninth time

The 67-year-old leader had won all the elections to the assembly since 1970.

Congress leader and UDF’s Chief Ministerial probable Oommen Chandy today won from his pocketborough Puthupally for the ninth consecutive time.

The 67-year-old leader had won all the elections to the assembly since 1970.

Chandy had a two-year stint as Chief Minister in 2004-06 after the resignation of A K Antony owning moral responsbility for the Congress’s defeat in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections.

Meanwhile,Chandy told reporters at Puthupally in Kottayam that the UDF could not manage a victory on expected lines.

The Congress-led front would discuss the circumstances which led to UDF candidates poor performance,he said. The “false allegations” raised by CPI(M) leaders and Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan influenced the election result,he said.

He said there was no crisis in UDF which contested the elections unitedly.

To a question,he said the elected MLAs along with the Congress High command will decide the Chief Minister.

Chandy,who has been contesting from Puthupally since 1970,defeated Suja Susan George of LDF by 33255 votes.
